  Wesley J. Marton, 58, died Thursday, April 18, 1996, at his home.
  Services were held at 2:00 pm, Saturday in Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jim O'Dell officiating. Burial was in Admiral Cemetery.
  Mr. Marton was born in Taylor County, and married Joyce Gary in 1985 in La Porte. He was a Baptist.
  Survivors include his wife of Baird; three stepchildren, Barbara Barnett and Cheri Goble, both of Cross Plains, and Vinson Carroll of Loving, NM; one sister, Treva Marton Reed of Sweetwater, one brother, W. L. Marton of Cisco; eight step grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.
  Pall bearers were Allen Barnett, Chris Duncan, Durvon Gary, Bill Gary, Lenley Goble and Don Stoker.

  Clifford Lewis (Mac) McCleary, 85, of Baird died at 9:15 p. m. Friday in Callahan General Hospital following a lengthy illness.
  Services were at 2 p. m. Sunday in Morgan-Parker Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. John Dorn, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Baird, officiated. Burial was in Ross Cemetery.
  Born Dec. 20, 1892, in Peoria, Ill., Mr. McCleary was a retired gas station operator. He married Cathryn West in 1926 in Sweetwater. He was a longtime resident of Baird.
  He was a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife: two daughters, Cathryne Hucklebridge of Longview and Mildred Hart of Baird; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Rites for Ray McDermett Held Saturday
  Funeral services for Ray McDermett, who died in South America some weeks ago, which were held at the Baptist church last Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. The services were conducted by Rev. Joe R. Mayes, pastor.
  Pall bearers were: Oscar McDermett, Hugh McDermett, Carlos McDermett, H.H. McDermett, Jr., cousins of the deceased and James C. Asbury, H.M. Dudley, Boro Brame, W.P. Kershner, Fred Estes, Robert Estes, Haynie Gilliland, Royce Gilliland.
  Ray McDermett was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. W.R. McDermett, both of whom preceded him in death. He was born in Baird June 28, 1894. In 1910 he went to Fort Worth where he attended school and later with his parents moved to Pecos and he continued to make his home in West Texas until in 1917, when he entered the service of his country, sailing for France in December of that year. He spent two years in over seas service, returning home in December 1919, and again returned to the West. Shortly after his return he accepted a position with the Andes Copper Mining Co. and continued with them up to the time of his death. Ray was a young man, who commanded the respect and confidence of all who knew him, and many regret his untimely death.

  LUBBOCK -- Services for Arvin C. Melton, 74, of Lubbock were to be at 3:30 p.m. today at Oakwood Baptist Church. Dr. A.B. Lightfoot was to officiate, assisted by Mark Murdock. Burial was to follow in Resthaven Memorial Park under direction of Franklin-Bartley Funeral Home of Lubbock. Mr. Melton died Wednesday at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock after a brief illness.
  He was born Oct. 23, 1908 in Baird. He was married to Lola Brack on Jan. 1, 1938 in Baird.
  Mr. Melton, a former resident of Odessa, was a retired general supervisor for Henry L. Stafford Highway Construction Company in Lubbock. He was a Baptist. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, member of Order of the Eastern Star in Austin and first vice president of Dr. A.B. Lightfoot Evangelistic Association.
  Survivors other than his wife include two brothers, Donald F. Melton of Breckenridge and Zolon C. Melton of Coleman; and two grandchildren.

Callahan Native's Rites at Santone
  CLYDE, June 13 -- Funeral for Dr. Edward Merrick, 67, will be held in San Antonio.
  Dr. Merrick, a native of Callahan County, died at 11 p.m. Wednesday in the Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio. He had been ill since last September.
  He practiced medicine in San Antonio about 40 years, having given up his practice only last January.
  Born and reared on a farm between Clyde and Eula, he was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Merrick, pioneer Clyde residents. He practiced at Winters about a year before going to San Antonio.
  Survivors include his wife and son, Edward Jr., San Antonio; five sisters, Mrs. Oscar Pyeatt, Mrs. Dessie Patton, and Mrs. Ubah Nunn, all of Clyde; Mrs. Maude Young, Lubbock; Mrs. Mamie Bell Hess, Modesto, Calif.; two brothers, Hardy Merrick, Abilene, and Ira Merrick, Garden City, Kans.

Rites Today for Mrs. Merrick
Pioneer Resident of Eula Succumbs to 10-Day Illness
  Funeral was to be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the Eula Methodist Church for Mrs. J.W. Merrick, 80, who died Monday morning at the farm home which had been her residence for 54 years. Mrs. Merrick succumbed to a stroke of partial paralysis which she suffered March 11.
  W.G. Black, Abilene Church of Christ minister, was to conduct the service with burial to be in the Eula cemetery. Harold F. Merrick, Dr. Burris Young, Harold Hayden, Bruce Pyeatt, and Clifton Patton, grandsons of Mrs. Merrick, were named pallbearers.
  Daughter of Confederate General William J. Estes, Mrs. Merrick was born in Alabama Oct. 27, 1857. Her family moved to Collin County, Texas when she was 12, and to Callahan County in 1879. She was married March 5, 1884 to J.W. Merrick. They celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary a week before Mrs. Merrick became ill. Mr. Merrick passed his 85th birthday at the bedside of his wife Sunday.
  Other than her husband, Mrs. Merrick is survived by nine children: Dr. Edward H. Merrick, San Antonio; Mrs. J.M. Young, Lubbock; Mrs. Oscar Pyeatt, Mrs. Ben Nunn, and Mrs. Lora Lyles, all of Clyde; Hardy Merrick of Estes Park, Colo.; Mrs. Wesley Patton, Big Spring; Era Merrick, Garden City, Kans.; and Mrs. Will Hess, Pittsburg, California; one sister, Mrs. Alex Williams of Kress; 23 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Callahan Settler of 1877 Passes
  CLYDE. March 8.--(Spl)--James W. Merrick, 87, one of the pioneer settlers of Callahan county, died at the old family home near here at 4 this afternoon. "Uncle Jimmie", as he was affectionately known, had been a resident of the county since 1877.
  Funeral will be at 3:30 Sunday afternoon at the Church of Christ with Andy Morris, minister, officiating. Burial will be beside the grave of his wife who died three years ago. Patterson Funeral Home will be in charge.
  Merrick was a former county commissioner from this precinct. At one time he was a director of the Clyde National Bank. Merrick also was active in church and school circles and for years was a member of the Enterprise school board.
  Merrick was born March 20, 1853 in Hunt County. He came here in 1877 and settled at the head of Deadman creek. Merrick hauled lumber from Fort Worth to build his first house. He was married to Ellen Estes March 5, 1884.
  Survivors include nine of their 10 children. One, F.W. died in 1919. The surviving sons and daughters are Dr. E.H. Merrick, San Antonio; Mrs. Jim Young, Lubbock; Mrs. Beulah Pyeatt, Mrs. Ben Nunn, Mrs. Lora Randolph and Hardy Merrick, all of Clyde; Mrs. Wesley Patton, Big Spring; Ira Merrick, Scott, Kan.; and Mrs. W. A. Hess, Pittsburgh, Calif. Twenty-three grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren also survive.
  Grandsons will be pallbearers at the funeral.

Mrs. Merrick's Rites To Be Held at Eula
  CLYDE. July 29--(Spl)--Funeral for Mrs. Nannie E. Merrick, 87, who died today in Abilene at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clarence Tarrant, 1726 Cedar Street, will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. from the Eula Methodist Church.
  Mrs. Merrick had been ill for several years and made her home recently with her daughter in Abilene. She is survived by a son and two daughters, one residing in Stamford and the other in Tucson, Ariz.
  Arrangements are in charge of the Patterson Funeral Home.

Arizona Woman's Rites at Baird
  BAIRD. May 30--Funeral will be held at the Methodist church here Sunday at 4 p.m. for Mrs. O.O. Mobley of Glendale, Ark.[Ariz.], former resident of Abilene. She died Wednesday at Glendale.
  Rites will be conducted by the Rev. John English, pastor of the Methodist church, assisted by the Rev. A.A. Davis, pastor of the Baptist church.
  Pallbearers will be nephews, Homer Anderson, Waldon Lenoir, Sonny Price, W.D. Boyd, Don Price and Kenneth West. Designated honorary pallbearers are Jay and Jess Reynolds, Ben Lynch, John Peuorifoy and Oscar Pierce.
  Burial will be in Ross cemetery under direction of Wylie funeral home.
  Mrs. Mobley was born Dec. 6, 1896, at Albany. She lived in Abilene until her family moved to Glendale about 18 years ago.
  Survivors are her husband, a son, Owen, of Chicago; her mother, Mrs. W. Boyd of Baird; three brothers, Glenn and Lowell Boyd of Baird, and Douglas Boyd of Big Spring; five sisters, Mrs. Nell Mobley, Clyde; Mrs. J.E. Mobley, Mrs. H.O. Price and Mrs. Jack Gilliland, all of Baird, and Mrs. Carl West of Fort Worth.

  BAIRD -- Lil Mobley, 86, of Baird died at 2:15 a.m. Friday at Golden Holdiday Nursing Home after a three- month illness. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Parker Funeral Home Chapel.
  The Rev. H.B. Terry of Temple Baptist Church in Abilene will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Bill Perkins of First United Methodist Church of Baird. Burial will be in Ross Cemetery.
  Born April 4, 1895, in Shackelford county, she had lived in Baird before moving to Glendale, Ariz., where she resided for a time before returning to Baird 40 years ago. She married James Ernest Mobley in 1911 in Lusk. She was a Methodist.
  Survivors include a son, James Rondal of Plano; two brothers, Lowell Boyd of Baird and Doug Boyd of Big Spring; two sisters, Rose West and Nell Mobley, both of Baird; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
  Pallbearers will be Jim Clark, Bill Johnson, Benton Pruet, Dale Havins, Wayne Boyd, Lowell Evans, Buddy McWilliams, and Rondal Price.

  BAIRD -- Nell Mobley, 95, mother of Lowell Evans of Abilene, died Sunday at a local nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Parker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Sutton officiating. Burial will be in Ross Cemetery.
  Born in Shackelford County, she moved from Clyde to Baird 25 years ago. A homemaker, she was a member of First Baptist Church and the widow of Estus Mobley.
  Survivors include a sister, Rosa West of Baird; a brother, Douglas Boyd of Big Spring, a grandson, Milton Evans of Abilene; a great-granddaughter, Sara Lee of Abilene; and several nieces and nephews.

A Telegraph Operator Who Went Up and Over the Hill
  Baird, Tex., Apr 15 - The telegraph operator at Clyde died at his post this morning. He had been there but two weeks. This morning he telegraphed Train Dispatcher Perkins here the following: "I'm going up the hill. Send a doctor with the switch engine." Perkins inquired: "What's the matter?" The answer came back: "I'm dying. Send a doctor." The switch engine was sent up with Dr. West, but the man was dead before he arrived.
  Dallas, Tex, April 15 - The remains of J. J. Monroe, a young telegraph operator from Chattanooga, Tenn., who died at the post of duty at Clyde, passed today east with relatives. Telegraph and railroad officials with his brother operators raised about one hundred dollars to defray the expenses.

J.M. Morrisset, Early Area Settler, Rancher, Dies at 91
  CLYDE, Jan. 19 (RNS)-- J.M. Morrisset, 91, pioneer Taylor and Callahan County settler, died at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the home of a daughter, Mrs. C.G. Stinchcomb, near Hamby.
  A retired stock farmer and rancher, Mr. Morrisset came to Abilene in 1883(?) with a sister and brother-in- law, the late Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Miller. He worked as a carpenter for Mr. Miller, an early contractor and grocer, for a time and then decided he wanted to be a cowboy. He went to Callahan County and started work on the C.O. Morris ranch. After Mr. Morris' death, Mr. Morrisset became foreman of the ranch and later acquired his own ranch near Hamby.
  Mr. Morrisset was born April 17, 1863 at Waverly, Tenn. In 1888 Mr. Morrisset married Miss Annie Hancock near Clyde. The couple had lived near Clyde and Hamby ever since. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1938. Mrs. Morrisset died on Feb. 13, 1943. The couple took active part in activities in their community and in the First Methodist Church of Clyde.
  Mr. Morrisset is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Stinchcomb, and Mrs. Holland Holt, 1502 Victoria St., Abilene, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
  Four sons preceded him in death, R.W. Morrisset died as an infant, and R.H. Morrisset, K.K. Morrisset, and J.B. Morrisset died in recent years.
  Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Methodist Church with the Rev. J. A. Bell, visiting minister for the First Methodist Church in Abilene, officiating. He will be assisted by the Rev. A.B. Armstrong, pastor of the Clyde church, and others. Burial will be in the Clyde Cemetery.
  Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. They are C.G. Stinchcomb Jr. of Eastland, Ralph McAdams of Hamby, Audrey H. Ballew of Sweetwater, John Stash of Abilene, Clarence T. Holt of Albany, and John W. Morrisset of Lubbock.

  Cathryn Jean Mosley, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry H. Mosley, 1709 S. 8th, died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday at Hendrick Memorial Hospital. She was born at 1:27 a.m. Saturday.
  Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Clyde Cemetery with the Rev. Merrell Abbott, pastor of the Clyde Methodist Church, officiating under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Clyde.
  The father is employed in the parking garage at Citizens National Bank.
  Survivors are the parents, one sister, Deborah Susan; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Goin of Clyde; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Mosley of Baird; maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. A.E. Simpson of Clyde; maternal great-grandfather, W.D. Wallace of Yakima, Wash.; paternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Albro Wilson of Baird and a number of uncles and aunts.

  BAIRD--Funeral was to be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Wylie Funeral Home Chapel for Mrs. Fieta Elizabeth Mosley, 90-year old mother of 11 children. The widow of a longtime Callahan County farmer, James A. Mosley, she died early Wednesday in her home west of Baird after a long illness. She was born June 10, 1868 in Ohio.
  Officiating minister was to be the Rev. Lee Crouse, Clyde Methodist pastor. Burial was slated in Hazeldell Cemetery in Comanche.

Henry Mosley Dies; Rites Set
  BAIRD (RNS)-Henry Mosley, 75, died at 5:49 a.m. Saturday in Callahan County Hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Godfrey Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Wayland Dowden, Methodist minister from Clyde officiating. Burial will be in Hazeldale Cemetery near Gustine.
  Born March 21, 1893 in Corsicana, he had lived in the Midway community between Baird and Clyde since 1915. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Methodist Church at Clyde.
  Survivors include four brothers, Charley and Calvin, both of Graham, Monroe of El Paso, and Earl of Fort Worth; six sisters, Mrs. Dollie Faircloth, Mrs. O.R. Faircloth and Mrs. Middie Stroope of Clyde, Mrs. Mina Massingill of Big Spring, Mrs. Emma Ray of Midland and Mrs. Ophelia Faircloth of Abilene.
  Nephews will be pallbearers.

Former El Paso Ranchman Dies Near Baird, Texas
  Jim Murray, aged 55, former ranchman of El Paso, died of heart disease near Baird, Texas.
  He is survived by his widow, mother, and four sisters. His mother, Mrs. K. Murray, will make her home in the future with her daughter, Mrs. Steven C. Marshall, 1135 North California Street.
  The other sisters are Mrs. Kate Canterbury, Santa Anna, Calif; Mrs. B. C. Snodgrass, Phoenix, Ariz, and Mrs. J. E. House, Mercedes, Texas.
  Burial took place near his old home in Cottonwood, Texas, May 5.

  CLYDE -- Services for Harry J. Nelson, 92, former Clyde resident, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Methodist Church here. The Rev. Lee Crouch will officiate. The body will lie in state at Bailey Funeral Home until services are held. Burial will be in Ross Cemetery at Baird.
  Mr. Nelson died at 7 a.m. Thursday in the Veterans Hospital at Big Spring after a two-month illness. Before going to the hospital two weeks ago, he had been living with a great-nephew, Harold Webb, in Marfa.
  A bricklayer by trade, he had done work on the Texas capitol building in Austin, as well as the Abilene State School and buildings at Texas A&M College at College Station.
  Born Sept. 7, 1865 in Kemper County, Miss., he was married to Mattie Sutton, who died several years ago. Mr. Nelson moved from Clyde to San Angelo and worked there several years before moving to Marfa about five years ago.
  Survivors include one granddaughter, Mrs. Merion Graves of Denver, Colo.; one stepson, Dr. Harry Sutton of California; two nephews, S.E. Webb of Clyde and Frank G. Webb of El Paso; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. M.L. Nix's Rites Set Monday
  Funeral for Mrs. M.L. Nix, 89, formerly of Clyde and Abilene, will be held Monday at the May Street Baptist Church in Fort Worth. Burial will be in a Fort Worth cemetery.
  Mrs. Nix died Wednesday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Claude Brooks of Redondo Beach, Calif.
  Sister of Mrs. E.E. Kuykendall, 1342 Vogel Ave. in Abilene, Mrs. Nix was born in Crawford County, Ark. She and her husband were pioneer residents of Clyde.
  Preceded in death by her husband, a sister and two sons, she is survived by three sons: Eli Nix of Glen Rose and L.B. and Lee Nix, both of Portland, Ore.; three daughters, Mrs. Brooks of Redondo Beach, Mrs. Ben Miller of Portales, N.M. and Mrs. Clinch of Fort Worth with whom she was making her home; two sisters, Mrs. Kuykendall of Abilene and Mrs. J.B. Bexley of Jacksonville, and a brother, John B. Ely of Santa Monica, Calif. and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

H.C. Norsworthy, Ex-Clyde Man, Dies
  CLYDE, June 28 (RNS)--H.C. Norsworthy, 70, former resident of Clyde, died at his home in Wichita Falls at 10 p.m. Monday. He was owner and manager of the Norsworthy Music Center in Wichita Falls.
  His wife is the former Imogene Pool. They were married at Eula about 54 years ago. They lived in Clyde for many years and while here he was employed by the P.C. Steen Hardware Co. The family moved about 1918 from Clyde to Dallas and later to Wichita Falls. He was the only son of A.A. Norsworthy, early day Baptist minister of this area.
  Survivors beside his wife are four daughters and two sons, one of whom is Volus Norsworthy, educational worker in a Baptist Church at Wichita Falls and three sisters, Mrs. Arthur McEachern of Lubbock, Mrs. Beulah Pool of San Angelo, and Mrs. J. J. Pee of 735 Chestnut St., Abilene.

Military Funeral for Ex-Clyde Man
  CLYDE, July 13--A military funeral for M-Sgt. Arch L. Parisher, 38, formerly of Clyde, will be held Tuesday afternoon in the national cemetery at San Antonio.
  Sgt. Parisher, who was stationed at Travis AFB, was killed Wednesday in a car-truck wreck at Fairfield, Calif. His wife and three children, Bobby, 18, Darrel Wayne, 6, and Barbara Sue, 3, lived with him at Fairfield.
  Other survivors are his father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Parisher of Clyde; two sisters, Mrs. Florence McDonald of Maryneal and Mrs. Ella Lee Robbins of Austin; four brothers, Emmett of Flagstaff, Ariz., Tom of Ozona, Lee of Houston and Damon, address not given.

  BAIRD (RNS) -- Mrs. Homer (Ola Faye) Price, 76, of Baird died Tuesday evening at West Texas Medical Center in Abilene after a lengthy illness. Services are pending at Morgan-Hargrove Funeral Home.
  Born Ola Faye Boyd April 1, 1899 in Breckenridge, she married Homer Price Sept. 13, 1925 in Clyde. He died in 1969. Mr. Price was a former Callahan County sheriff. Mrs. Price was a 30-year Baird resident.
  Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Doris Havins of Baird; two sons, Don of Abilene and Rondal of Baird; three sisters, Mrs. Nell Mobley and Mrs. Lil Mobley, both of Baird and Mrs. Carl West of Fort Worth; two brothers, Douglas Boyd of Big Spring and Lowell Boyd of Baird and four grandchildren. A son, W.J. Price, and a grandson preceded her in death.
