Clyde Man Dies Here
CLYDE, June 20. (RNS) -- R.B. Campbell, 84, died at 7 a.m. Friday at Hendrick Memorial Hospital in Abilene. He had been ill for the past two weeks and a patient at the hospital since Sunday night.
Bailey Funeral Home of Clyde will announce funeral plans.
Born May 3, 1868, in Georgia, Mr. Campbell came to Texas when two. His family steeled [sic] near Greenville in Hunt County.
He married Frances Elizabeth Hamblen at Liberty in Hunt County Oct. 5, 1890.
After their marriage, the couple moved to Stephens County and settled near Eolian where Mr. Campbell engaged in farming.
In 1908 he moved to Clyde and bought a home a half mile east of Clyde. Mr. Campbell was engaged in fruit and truck farming. He was also a carpenter.
Mrs. Campbell died May 3, 1949.
He had been a member of the Methodist Church since 1907.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Minnie Byrd of Clyde, who made her home with her father, Mrs. Mary Brown of Chico, Calif., and Mrs. Connie Connally of Glenrose, Tex.; three sons, R.B. Jr., and Lloyd Campbell of Austin, and Bryan Campbell of Lawn; 17 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
Two of his granddaughters, Mrs. Earl Dusek of Abilene, and Mrs. Frances Minor of Oklahoma City, were reared in his home.

John Collier Dies at Baird
Pioneer Texas Educator, 93, Will Be Buried in Dallas
Dr. John Collier, 93, pioneer educator of Texas, died Wednesday at his home in Baird, Callahan County. His body will be received in Dallas Thursday and funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery.
Dr. Collier was a native of South Carolina and came to Texas in 1859. He was one of the first to establish a college in the State. He founded a Presbyterian school at Fort Worth. He was licensed as a minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1854. He taught at various times at Oakland, Alvarado, Mansfield, Fort Worth, Waxahachie, Walnut Springs, Buffalo Gap and Baird.
On May 18, 1917, his eighty-third birthday was celebrated in Dallas with a reception and a dinner, more than 150 attending. He is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Henry E. Spear of Dallas, Mrs. John Mangrum of Waco, Mrs. Ida Cox of Los Angeles, Mrs. Adolphus Ragan of New York City and Miss Edith Collier of Baird.
Active pallbearers will be J. Thomas Wells, J. Howard Etheridge, Walter Jones, C.R. Jones, Dr. J.W. Halsell and C.L. Moss.

BAIRD, Dec. 27 -- Funeral was held Monday morning at Putnam Methodist Church for Charley C. Cunningham, Putnam drug store owner.
Mr. Cunningham, 45, died Saturday at his residence at Putnam.
Burial was directed by Wylie Funeral Home of Baird.
Mr. Cunningham was born Aug. 26, 1910 at Putnam and lived there all his life.

Clyde Singing Teacher Dies
CLYDE, Nov. 17 (RNS) -- John Bassett Easterling, Sr., 82, died at his home here about 9 p.m. Monday after an illness of about four years. He had been seriously ill about one month.
He was born near Prescott, Ark., Feb. 2, 1871. He came to Texas and first lived in Potosi. He moved to Texas in September, 1897.
He was married Dec. 24, 1900 to Myrtle Baxter, who was one of 14 people killed in the June 10, 1938 tornado here. They moved from Potosi to Clyde after their marriage.
Mr. Easterling was a singing school teacher in the area. He also taught singing in eight states. He was well- known throughout West Texas as a song leader and instructor.
In later years in the 1920s, he operated a dry goods store in Clyde. He was active in the Baptist Church and a member here since 1905. He taught the Victory Men's Bible Class in the church here more than 30 years.
Survivors are three sons, J.B., Jr. of Clyde, Lester of Borger and M-Sgt. Baxter Easterling with the Army in Germany; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one brother, Tom Easterling of Prescott, Ark.; three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Purtle of Prescott, Ark., and Mrs. Maude Price and Mrs. Eula Loomis, both of Wichita Falls.
Funeral will be held in the Clyde Baptist Church. Time has not yet been set. The Rev. W.C. Dever, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be beside the grave of his wife in Clyde Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home.

BAIRD, Sept. 29 (RNS) -- Mrs. R.L. Elliott Sr., 78, died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Callahan County Hospital where she had been ill for the past 11 days.
Mrs. Elliott was born in Hughes Springs in Cass County, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joe Fite. She was married in Albany on Aug. 9, 1896, moving to Baird in 1897 and living here since that time. Last month Mr. and Mrs. Elliott celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Funeral will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church here, with the Rev. Herbert G. Markley officiating. Burial will be in Ross Cemetery.

Ex-Cowhand, W E England, Dies at Clyde
CLYDE, Feb. 13 (RNS) -- William Ealy England, 60, died here at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ernest Klepper, where he resided since 1945.
He had been ill the past three years and bedfast more than a year after a stroke 14 months ago.
A native of Tennessee, Mr. England was born Oct. 9, 1868 in Robertson, Tenn. He came to Texas at the age of 8 with his family, settling in Fannin County.
On Reece Ranch
He moved to this area as a young man and first was employed on the Reece Ranch. Later he was on the Love Ranch south of Abilene near old Iberis community.
He married Miss Molly Eunice Love in 1890 and they lived in Abilene until her death in 1908. While there he was employed by the T&P railroad.
He farmed in Parker County for 25 years. He was a member of the Church of Christ here.
In 1918 he married Mrs. Elizabeth Rowland. She died in 1945.
Funeral Monday
Other survivors are a son, Gene England, Nogales, Ariz.; a brother, C.T. England of Paris; a sister, Mrs. Cora Tallman, Fort Worth; three step-children, Frank Rowland of Clyde, and Richard and Virgil Rowland, both of Stamford; two grandchildren and several step-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Clyde Church of Christ with A.A. Berryman, minister, officiating. Burial will be in the Colony Hill Cemetery south of Abilene with Bailey Funeral Home in charge.
The body will lie in state at the funeral home until time for services.
Pallbearers are John Christian, W.J. Hannaford, Archie Pee, Hub Kniffin, Hiram Cook and G.A. Swenson.

W.F. Evans, Pioneer Resident Dies
Mr. W.F. Evans, 81 years of age, a pioneer of Callahan county, died at the home of his grandson, Wm. J. Evans, in Baird, Tuesday night, following an illness of several weeks.
The remains were carried back to Cottonwood, his home, for burial Wednesday afternoon, funeral services being conducted by Rev. Ross Respess, at the Baptist church and burial made in the Cottonwood cemetery.
Pall bearers were: Harry __, B.H. Freeland, __ Ray, S.A. Moore, Johnnie __ and W.A. Brock.
A large concourse of friends were present to pay a last tribute of respect to another one of our pioneers, who contributed his share to the building of this wonderful county of ours.
Mr. Evans was a native Texan and has been a resident of this county since 1882, where he came to Cottonwood and settled on the farm 2 miles west of that place, where he has made his home all of these 48 years. He was unusually active for a man of 81 years and looked after his farm himself.
Mr. Evans has been ill for several weeks and some two weeks was brought to the Griggs hospital for treatment and later removed to the home of Wm. J. Evans.
He was born Oct. 6, 1849, was married to Miss Frances Ann Gunnell in Erath county March 6, 1869. He was the father of three children, two of whom have preceeded [sic] him in death. They were: J.C. Evans, the father of Wm. J. Evans, who died Jan. 9, 1921, and his only daughter, Miss Annice Evans, who died in 1892 when a young girl. His wife and one son, J.W. Evans, of Hammond, Ind., survive him. He is also survived by one only brother, Walker Evans of Stanton, who was here for the funeral, also his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Emma Evans of Baird, three grandsons, and two granddaughters, viz. J.T. Evans of Graham; Mrs. Hub Swan of Spur; Mrs. J.W. Stacy of Fort Worth, Wm. J. Evans and Tommy Evans of Baird and a number of grandchildren in Hammond, Ind.

Mrs. Gilliland Dies Suddenly
Mrs. Mary Ruth Gilliland, 56, of Rt. 2, Baird, died at 11 a.m. Tuesday, apparently the victim of a heart attack, while visiting in the home of a sister, Mrs. J. E. Mobley of Baird.
Funeral was held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Baird First Methodist Church, with Rev. Bruce Parks, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Ross Cemetery, under direction of Wylie Funeral Home.
Mrs. Gilliland was born in Shackelford County, July 20, 1903. She made her home there until she came to Baird 26 years ago. She married Jack Gilliland in Abilene on July 6, 1926.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Benton Pruet of Clyde and Mrs. Vince Higgins of Baird; four sisters, Mrs. Nell Mobley, Mrs. Ernest Mobley, Mrs. Homer Price, all of Baird, and Mrs. Carl West of Fort Worth; three brothers, Glenn and Lowell Boyd of Baird and Douglas Boyd of Big Spring; her mother, Mrs. Walter Boyd of Baird; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Clarence Price, Burrus Miller, Lee Ivey, Leslie Bryant, Steve Stevenson and Hugh Ross.

Truck-Auto Crash Kills Baird Man
CISCO, Aug. 20 -- Funeral is pending at Wylie Funeral Home of Baird for William Patrick (Pat) Haley, Baird railroad man, who died at 7:50 p.m. Monday in Graham Hospital here of injuries he received 25 minutes earlier in a car- truck collision near here. He was 63.
Haley, yardmaster for the Texas & Pacific Railroad of Baird, was fatally injured when the 1955 car he was driving collided with a truck driven by Verlan Ernest Overstreet, 40, of Gorman. The accident occurred 5.2 miles west of Cisco on U.S. Highway 80.
Neither Overstreet nor his daughter, a passenger in the truck, was injured.
Highway Patrolman Leslie Strawn said the sedan driven by Haley was traveling west and the truck, loaded with cattle, was headed east. The two vehicles collided almost head-on as they topped a hill. Skid marks on the highway indicated Haley had been on the wrong side of the highway and was trying to get back on the right side, Strawn said.
The patrolman said the automobile was a total loss. None of the cattle were injured, and were transferred to Heyser Co. trucks and taken to Fort Worth.
Mr. Haley, employed by the T&P since 1914, was returning to Baird from New Orlean, La. at the time of the accident. He had taken his wife, Stella, to visit her daughter, Mrs. Frances Haley Laverell, and two grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife: two daughters, Mrs. Carmen Fuller of Fort Worth and Mrs. Laverell; three brothers, W.E. of Baird, Earl and Carl, both of Big Spring; three sisters, Mrs. R.V. Hart of Big Spring, Mrs. Jack Drake of Midland and Mrs. Bess Ray of Baird; and four grandchildren.

Dr. Paul C. Witt of Abilene Christian College was to officiate, assisted by A.A. Berryman. Burial in Clyde Cemetery was to be directed by Laughter-North Funeral Home.
Dr. Leonard Burford and members of the ACC student body were to direct the song service at the funeral.
Mrs. Hays moved to Abilene in 1926 from Clyde. Her husband was on the ACC board of trustees from 1906 until his death in 1924. In 1955 Mrs. Hays was honored as an "outstanding friend" of ACC. With the exception of five years, she has had at least one of her children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren attending ACC since it was founded.
Her son, M.L. Hays of Clyde, was one of the 25 students to enter the college when it opened in 1906. A great- grandson, Keelon Hays of Clyde, is now a student at ACC.
Born May 22, 1869 in Carmel, Ind., she was married to Mr. Hays at Clyde on Sept. 19, 1888.
Survivors include three sons, M.L. and Earl C. Hays, both of Clyde and Harvey L. Hays of 536 S. Mockingbird Lane; one daughter, Mrs. Clyde D. Echols Sr.; one sister, Mrs. Ethel Jones of Abilene; eight grandchildren and 13 great- grandchildren.

Mrs. Sarah Rebecca Hoover died at her home near Wolf's Crossing Thursday, April 19th, and was buried Friday afternoon at the Toby cemetery. Rev. H.S. Goodenough conducted the funeral services.
Mrs. Hoover moved to this community last fall from Callahan County and resided with her two sons, who survive her.
Deceased was the widow of Mr. Jack [Andrew Jackson] Hoover, a brother of the late Uncle Ike [Isaac] Hoover.

Pallbearers will be John Berry, James Berry, Jimmie Briscoe, Ed Freeman, Louis Hollis, Wallace Johnson, Von Ray McClure and Tom South. Burial will be in Clyde Cemetery beside the grave of his wife. Bailey Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mr. Klepper was born June 17, 1896 in Clyde, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Perry Klepper. He married Minnie Vernon Kniffen Sept. 3, 1914 in Abilene. She died Dec. 6, 1965.
Mr. Klepper married Rosa Osborn Oct. 10, 1967 in Anson. He had lived in Clyde all his life and was a farmer. He was employed by Shank's Nursery and also worked at the Abilene Auction Barn.

Rites Pend for Abilene Woman, 94
Mrs. Eugenia Ellen Kuykendall, 94, long-time Abilene area resident and friend of Hardin-Simmons University, died at 9:15 p.m. Sunday in Hendrick Memorial Hospital after six days illness. She had been in ill health for several years.
Mrs. Kuykendall was the first white baby girl born in Stephenville in 1863. She was one of the first women telegraph operators who went to work for the Texas and Pacific Railroad.
Mrs. Kuykendall's first job with the T&P was at Loraine, then she and her husband moved to Clyde, where they operated the railroad station for about 15 years. They lived on a farm north of Clyde until 1915 when they moved to South Texas because of his health.
After Mr. Kuykendall's death in 1918 she moved to Abilene and made her home at 1342 Vogel St. since 1920. Following her husband's death, Mrs. Kuykendall took two years of English and Bible at Simmons College. She sent all of her children there, and assisted several ministerial students through college.
She was a charter member of the Clyde First Baptist Church, where her father, the Rev. George B. Ely, was pastor. She was a member of the University Baptist Church here, and a church worker all her life. Mrs. Kuykendall was a past member of the Pythian Sisters Lodge.
Funeral is pending arrival of relatives at Kiker-Warren Funeral Home.

Mrs. Kuykendall was the first white baby girl born in Stephenville in 1863. She was one of the first women telegraph operators who went to work for the Texas and Pacific Railroad.
Mrs. Kuykendall's first job with the T&P was at Loraine, then she and her husband moved to Clyde, where they operated the railroad station for about 15 years. They lived on a farm north of Clyde until 1915 when they moved to South Texas because of his health.
After Mr. Kuykendall's death in 1918 she moved to Abilene and made her home at 1342 Vogel St. since 1920. Following her husband's death, Mrs. Kuykendall took two years of English and Bible at Simmons College. She sent all of her children there, and assisted several ministerial students through college.
She was a charter member of the Clyde First Baptist Church, where her father, the Rev. George B. Ely, was pastor. She was a member of the University Baptist Church here, and a church worker all her life. Mrs. Kuykendall was a past member of the Pythian Sisters Lodge.

Ura Lovell, 64, Ex-Clyde Resident, Dies in Alaska
CLYDE, March 14 (RNS) -- Ura H. Lovell, 64, in the Navy's civilian service, died about 2 p.m. Sunday of a heart attack in Adkia, Alaska, according to word received Sunday night by his sister, Mrs. A.C. Klepper.
Mr. Lovell and his wife visited in Clyde last September, and he had a heart attack then, but he hadn't had any more trouble until Sunday, Mrs. Klepper said.
He was born Sept. 3, 1890 in Collin County, and moved to Callahan County while he was still a small child. They first settled at Admiral, and moved to Clyde a year later. Mr. Lovell served in the Navy during World War I, and has been in service or on reserve status most of the time since.
In 1926 Mr. Lovell married Miss Lorena Porter in Florida.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete, but will be announced by Bailey Funeral Home in Clyde.
Survivors include his wife; three sisters, Mrs. Klepper, Mrs. L.D. McIntosh of 1209 Hickory St. in Abilene, and Mrs. Joe Smart of 342 Mockingbird Lane in Abilene; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Rosa Lovell of Cottonwood and Mrs. Dessie Baley of Abilene, and several nieces and nephews.
