Welcome

Reeves County was created from Pecos County in 1883, and was named after Texas legislator and soldier George Robertson Reeves. Unlike other counties in this area, Reeves was organized almost immediately in 1884 with Pecos as the county seat. The county didn't have a large population until the coming of the railroad and the oil boom and has less than 15,000 people today. The Pecos Army Air Field was one of the bases that used women pilots (WASPs) to ferry planes and goods during World War II. At one point during the war, the base had a population of over 4000 soldiers and civilians who worked for the Army.

Balmorhea State Park was built at Toyahvale by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The park was deeded to the State of Texas in 1934 but didn't open to the public until 1968. It's home to the largest spring-fed swimming pool in the world.
