MENTONE - was Porterville; the "Record of Appointment of Postmasters" inaccurately records the date of the name change as 1 May 1931. First PM was John J. Combs (1893), Tom G. Wright (1931); aka "Ramsey". POP.: 1893 = "a store and some adobe houses", 1980 = @50. Named by: an early settler for Menton, France.
PORTERVILLE - the "Record of Appointment of Postmaster" inaccurately records the last day of operation as 30 April 1931; POP in 1909 = @100; Named for: Dr. Phil Porter who plated the townsite; NOTE: moved north to the Mentone site because Pecos River floods isolated the post office, and because of the discovery of oil there.
WOODY - named for: Fannin W. ("Woody") Johnson, prominent area rancher.
