     THE 36^th DIVISION ASSOCIATION     

     June-July 1917  A major contribution of Goliad and the surrounding counties, i.e. DeWitt, Bee, Karnes, Refugio, and Victoria, was the formation of an infantry company for the 36th Texas National Guard, for service in France during World War I.  The spirit and enthusiasm exhibited by these patriotic young men, the businesses, and local communities was truly overwhelming in response to their nation's need for volunteers.  As a testament,  the company was made up of many hometown boys of Goliad as well as from neighboring communities and towns.  The company's formation witnessed the membership of native sons, brothers, cousins, childhood friends, and even father and son, joining together, determined in their patriotic defense of liberty and freedom.  The company's first  commander, the local District Attorney for Goliad, his honor Wayne Burke Davis, instilled confidence and leadership for the community and the newly formed company.   And so, history has been written by these many gallant friends in arms and many more like them, and those that gave their ultimate sacrifice for God, Country, and their Community.  Douglas Anderson
