Cameron County is the southernmost county in Texas and is also the southernmost point in mainland USA outside of Florida. Cameron County also borders the Gulf of Mexico. Brownsville is the largest town and the county seat. The only US city along the Rio Grande to surpass it in size is El Paso although there are several larger cities on the south side of the river. Cameron County is named for Capt Ewen Cameron, a soldier during the Texas Revolution. The official name is County of Cameron.

On a modern note, the Space X launch control is near Boca Chica, just outside of Brownsville on the coast. Some of the folks in Boca Chica want to incorporate as a city called "Starbase".
