Brewster County is the largest county in Texas and is actually larger than the states of Rhode Island, Delaware and Connecticut. It's almost
6200 sq. miles (16,040km
2) and is largely desert with the only substantial water supply being the Rio Grande. Brewster County was
created from Presidio in 1887 with Murphyville designated as the county seat. Brewster is named for Henry Percy Brewster, who fought in the
Texas Revolution. Murphyville was renamed
Alpine in 1888.
