World War II

7 Dec 1941 to 1 Sep 1945

During our years in Junior High School and throughout our years in High School (in Beeville) we were constantly made aware of world events as people around us entered into the military services. It is "constantly made aware of world events as people around us entered into the military services. It is appropriate to devote some space for those who were called into duty. Our class of '45 was very patriotic. We gathered metal to be recycled into arms. Even the Cannon from the first World War which rested on the courthouse square was given to the war effort. We purchased war bonds and stamps each Monday. Some enlisted during their High School years.

It was only recently that the United States government recognized the Merchant Marines as veterans; for forty years they have watched the armed services honored while their service was forgotten. More than six thousand gave their lives in the war, a higher percentage of war dead than any other branch of service except the marines. Some of our fellow seafarers went to sea at sixteen; they were too impatient to be a part of the war effort to wait until the other services would take them at seventeen. Several participated in the convoys which journeyed through the icy North Atlantic to supply the Russian ports of Murmansk and Archangel; the Russian government has given them medals commemorating this perilous run. These sea farers are not mentioned in the attached report of service personnel because at that time they were not recognized as such. Buncy WALTON is a grand example of this fact. There were members of our High School who joined the National Guard at an early age with anticipation to enter into the military services.

General George Catlett MARSHALL was a career soldier who rose to the rank of five-star general and later became Secretary of State. Foreseeing that the United States would be drawn into the conflict that had broken out in Europe, in 1940 MARSHALL insisted on peacetime conscription and calling up Reserves and National Guard, and in 1941 he helped formulate a global strategy to aid potential allies, even before American participation. After Pearl Harbor (7 Dec 1941), MARSHALL became chief military strategist for the Allied Powers and directed operations of United States forces in both the European and Pacific theaters. In December 1944 he was made general of the army. By the end of the war he had raised the army from a force of less than 200,000 to one of more than 8 million.

As Chief of Staff, MARSHALL issued to the Secretary of Defense a report on 1 September 1945, which was a comprehensive report listing those who served in the military forces from Bee County. Within a week of resigning his wartime post in November 1945, MARSHALL was sent as President Harry S. TRUMAN's personal envoy to resolve differences between Chinese Natioalists and Communists. Because of ill health he resigned as Secretary of State in 1949, served briefly as president of the American Red Cross, and from 1950 to 1951, during the Korean War, served as Secretary of Defense. In 1953 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Price.

The Bee County Roster (except Merchant Marines) follows, "Col" following a name indicating the black race. I have been preparing a booklet of information for our recent class reunion and included it in the back of the booklet. I felt that it was appropriate to devote some space to those who were serving in the military. I hope it will serve as a springboard to others whom we haven't thought about in times lost. The report doesn't carry someone like Carter ARNOLD who graduated from Beeville and then moved away to Nueces County before entering service. Carter was a very fine football player, his father was the Sheriff and he became one of the most decorated soldiers from our area but did not enlist from Bee County. I think this is correct.

I am listed as Levi L. Allbright. I went into service under the name of Levi because my mother listed my name in that manner for the food ration card required at that time. I went all through service with that name. It wasn't until I was finally discharged that I changed my name as it appears on my birth certificate. It took some time because even my GI Bill was messed up. When I went into service, R. A. HALL was on the Board appointed by the President. Rex WEST was the chairman of the board, Grover IMPSON was secretary and M. L. CLAUNCH was clerk.

We pay tribute to the following Bee County citizens who served or are now serving their country in the military forces:
