Funeral services for Harvey S. Wade, 96, prominent Upshur County citizen and member of a pioneer family here, were held last Wednesday afternoon at Rosewood Baptist Church. Mr. Wade died Dec. 9 at Gilmer Convalescent Center following a long illness. It was in 1867 that his father, Whitfield A. Wade, moved to Upshur County, settling in the Grice community and soon after married Miriam Elizabeth Knight. Harvey was born to that union Jan. 2, 1884 near Rosewood in West Upshur County. His father had moved to Texas from Georgia where he had been a gold miner during the Georgia Gold Rush in the 1840's and where he had served in the Georgia Confederate Militia.
Harvey Wade followed his father's footsteps and worked most of his life as a farmer although he also worked in the East Texas oilfield. Raised in a Christian home he was "born again" on Aug. 8, 1898 at Rosewood Baptist Church, then known as Double Springs. It was there also he was ordained a deacon in 1911. Harvey organized a Sunday School class at Latch with his wife Ola, daughter of former Sheriff Latch and that class led eventually to the organization of the Latch Baptist Church. He was the last surviving charter member of Latch Baptist Church.
He was a Christian for 81 1/2 years and was well-known throughout East Texas as a teacher in numerous singing schools, the last of which he taught after the age 65 in Gladewater. Mr. Wade was educated at Rosewood and Jacksonville Baptist College. He worked his way through college and was one of the first students of then-new college. Active in many civic affairs he led the temperance movement in West Upshur County at the beginning of the century. He once recalled that during the summer prior to his first year in college he had saved up $5 for the tuition, books and lodging for the semester. However at that time there was an informal saloon at Latch. The people of the community were opposed to it being there and Harvey Wade led the movement to close it down. Knowing that force would not work Wade gave the $5 he had saved to buy much of the stock of the saloon after which he took the bottles out in front and broke each bottle leading to the demise of the establishment. However as he recalled the "Lord provided me with the money to go to school." He was a Sunday School teacher most of his life even up into his 80's at Gilmer Convalescent Center. After the death of his first wife at an early age he married Emma Salter of Corsicana they were active the remainder of their lives in church work. He was married to Emma for 43 years until her death in 1961.
Mr. Wade did barbering at one time. His favorite hobby was always music and he organized the Wade Band of Sacred Music and was active in sacred music for more than 50 years. When asked to what he attributed his many years and good health on his 91st birthday in 1975 he said "I couldn't have done it. The good Lord made a stout ole ox when he made me!" He then added more seriously "I give all the credit to the Good Lord." This year he was nominated as Upshur County Senior Citizen of the year. He had three sons, Ellis, Leon and Truman, one daughter, LaNell, ten grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
