The Death of R.E. Emmons
  After we received the sad news of the death of our old friend, Robert Emmons, of Forrest City, AR, we met the only survivor of that once large family, Wes Emmons, a farmer living east of Selmer. Wes told us of the death of his only brother living, so far as he knew, and sorrowfully observed that he was the only one left, unless the youngest child, Nick, as we knew him was living.
  The father and mother, Uncle Nick, and "Aunt" Becky, died several years ago, and the memory of these good old people is respected and revered by the many who knew them in life.
  "Uncle" Nick was one of the first to operate a livery stable in Selmer, his celebrated livery and sale barn being located on the site where is now seen the calaboose of the town. He was a judge and lover of good horses, and many spanking teams and fancy rigs did he keep in the olden times," in the better days of the Republic," as the late Hon. Chas. A. Miller used to say.
  This Emmons family belonged to the pioneers, and the writer well remembers "Uncle" Nick, and his brothers, Art Emmons and "Uncle" Wes, all of them well known to the people of the county and particularly to those of the southern section. Clem Lea married a daughter of Art Emmons and her name was Miss Jane Emmons, she being the mother of Wm. Lea; R.C./O.? Lea, and Mrs. Minnie Downing. The parents are dead and William and Minnie survive, the former living in Selmer, the latter in AR. Many there are who remember, Clem Lea, one of the most famous characters the county ever produced.
  The family of "Uncle" Nick are all gone save Wes, and once the children living were Wes, aged now 70, Bob, Jim Fred and Nick, and three daughters.
  All of the boys once lived in Selmer or in the community. Bob was one of the most capable men in the employment of the Mobile & Ohio Railroad Company, in the construction department. Wes was a farmer. Jim was one of Selmer's first barbers, his shop being upstairs in the old, two-story green building, known as the Williams Store on Main Street the building being the one in which the now C.W. Barnes ran a saloon. This was more than forty years ago. Fred was a popular traveling salesman, and Nixon, Jr. a railroad man. He had been gone 22 years, and no word has come from him in this more than a score of years that are gone.
