Documentation:
* According to a story passed down orally by James Farley (grandson of Lawrence Farley,
Sr. and son of Lawrence Farley, Jr.), Mary (Goff) Farley was reported to have been the
third wife of Lawrence Farley, Sr. According to this story, the first two wives died and
were buried in Ireland; and, the only non-Catholic wife was the second wife, who was a
Methodist. Little else is known about the first two wives; and, no records of these women
have been found. Records show that his wife, Mary, and first four children came to America
on the Shannon in 1851; and, the ages on the passenger list were used to determine the
approximate dates of birth for Mary and James. The father, mother, and children settled at
Morgan County, Illinois, where Lawrence "Larry" Farley became the first member of the
family to be born outside of Ireland.
* The "Beresford Republic" obituary of Lawrence, Jr. mentioned that his mother had died
when he was only a year old; and, Mary (Goff) Farley's approximate date of death was
determined from this. The Farleys moved to the area of Freeport, Illinois.
* Two of the sons, James and Patrick, served in the military during the Civil War. The
last records of James having been alive were military records from 1862; and the 1916
obituary of his brother, Lawrence, listed James as having preceeded him in death while
still a resident of Illinois.
* The remaining members of the Farley family moved to Union County, Dakota Territory
during the 1870's, where the father and the families of four of his children proved up on
homesteads and remained there for the rest of their lives. Lawrence Farley, Sr. and four
of his children were buried in Union County, South Dakota. His wife, Mary, and son, James,
were both presumeably buried in Illinois.
