NOTES ON DAVID HOPKINS:
* The relationship of David Hopkins as a son of Benjamin Franklin Hopkins has yet to
be proved. He is included here as a possible son for several reasons. His year of birth
corresponds to the census date given for a son of Benjamin F. Hopkins. Both the children
and grandchildren of Samuel O. Hopkins and David Hopkins visited back and forth with the
same relatives in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia in the early to mid 1900's. I
have been working with one of his descendants for 25 years trying to prove this
relationship and we haven't been able to prove the link. Both sides of the family even
share some of the same family legends.
* David Hopkins first married Sarah "Sallie" Rothell/Rather and had one son,
Samuel born in 1862. They seperated and David and Samuel can be found in the 1870 Census
of Rabun Co., Ga. in approximately the same place where Samuel O. Hopkins can be found in
1860 and 1880. Naming patterns in Stephen Hopkins family seem to indicate that the males
were named after their father's brothers. It would seem that David Hopkins named his first
son Samuel for his brother, Samuel O. Hopkins. David married second Caroline Ramey of
Rabun Co., Ga. before 1873 and moved back to Oconee Co., S.C.
