Harold Wesley PLUMMER
* He ran away from home and enlisted in the Navy on November 20, 1917. He apparantly lied about his age at the time. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Georgia as a second class seaman. During the war he saw service on scout duty, hunting U- Boat oil tankers near the West Indies. He also made eight trips across the Atlantic with convoys. When the crew of the Georgia was reduced, he was assigned as a store keeper at the naval cold storage plant at Hampton Roads, Norfolk, Virginia, on December16, 1918. He was a signalman aboard the U.S.S. Georgia and was betterknown as "Percy". Info about ship - Assigned as a receiving ship at Boston, Georgia was called to duty at the outbreak of World War I, and commissioned again 6 April 1917. For the next 18 months she operated with the 3rd Division, Battleship Force, in fleet tactical exercises and merchant crew gunnery training, based in the York River, Virginia. She joined with Cruiser Force Atlantic briefly in September 1918 to escort convoys to meet their eastern escorts, and beginning 10 December 1918 was fitted out as a transport and attached to the Cruiser and Transport Force for the purpose of returning troops of the A.E.F. to the United States. Georgia made five voyages to France from December 1918 to June 1919 and brought home nearly 6,000 soldiers.
* SSN Death records show his DOB as March 20, 1899 but I think this was because he ran away from home in 1917 to enlist in the Navy and he lied about his age. Aunt Ginny confirmed this as a correct assumption.
* My recollection of my Grandfather was that he was always at work on the railroad. He told us that he would walk on top of the train. I remember that he had at least two fingers missing on his left hand (I think). He used to call me little Jamie and he would call my sister Jeanette, little pumpkin. He would make me chocolate ice cream and call it black. He always drove an older model Caddie. His garage had a dirt floor. In his basement he had cardboard attached to the ceiling to cover the beams. At the bottom of the stairs he use to hide cigar boxes of pennies in the ceiling.
