34. "Autobiography of Frank PINKERTON" great-grandson of Hugh PINKERTON: "It was stated by my father, Cyrus
Levi PINKERTON that when a young man, his grandfather (Hugh) was an employee of a grain mill owner who had a beautiful
daughter, but objected to the attentions of young Pinkerton to his daughter. But true love flourishes on opposition, and
they eloped, but the father's anger cooled and the young couple was forgiven and they lived happily ever after... My
grandfather was of Scotch extraction. His name was George Pinkerton."
Notes:
*Pennsylvania Township Tax lists for Hugh's places of residence cite Hugh's occupation as "Carpenter",
"Miller" or both "Carpenter and Miller' on various township tax records.
*There is a discrepancy in the named birthplace for Hugh's oldest children. Oral family history has them born
in Halifax Township, Dauphin County, but tax lists for the time of their births show that Hugh was living in Lancaster
County during those early years of his marriage to Margaret ECKERT.
*Harold L. PINKERTON, Sr. Genealogy Source Notebook "Hugh PINKERTON". Harold is the great-great-great
grandson of Hugh PINKERTON.
*The inspiration for Pinkerton Genealogy by Harold L. Pinkerton and his daughter, Sharon P.WAYLAND came from
communication with Paul W. PINKERTON a distant cousin, and his daughter Helen P.RYDELL, who in 1984-1990 worked on
mapping the various branches of Pinkerton cousins. Paul W. PINKERTON (1915-1990) was the great-great grandson of Hugh
PINKERTON (1767-1852).
*Frank Elmore PINKERTON was a son of Cyrus Levi PINKERTON, grandson of George PINKERTON and great-grandson of
Hugh PINKERTON. He was a printer and newspaper publisher in Rantoul, Illinois. His autobiography written in California
in 1933, was sent by his brother, Bertram Eugene PINKERTON, to Burton LeRoy PINKERTON, Jr. in Philadelphia in 1950. B.E.
PINKERTON had been in correspondence with PINKERTON cousins beginning in 1946 with Mrs. Betty PAUL REIDLER of Ashland,
PA in an attempt to share family history information. These "genealogy" letters were passed by Burton LeRoy PINKERTON,
Jr. to Betty PINKERTON HENDRICKS and from her to her brother, Harold LeRoy PINKERTON, Sr.
*Barton's "History of Lancaster County Mills." Lancaster County Historical Society
*Bruce PINKERTON of Newark, Delaware compiled "David PINKERTON, Sr., First PINKERTON Found in Lancaster Co.,
PA and some of his descendants, including those of Hugh PINKERTON of Dauphin Co., PA" 1993. His conjecture that Hugh
PINKERTON was a son of James PINKERTON can not been supported by primary source documents found to date. Also, of all
the male children descended from Hugh none was named "JAMES" or "DAVID".
*The Federal Census data for the Hugh PINKERTON - Family Group Sheet was culled from the Heritage Quest On-
Line Database.
