  25. Obituary of Hiram W. PINKERTON, "Pottsville Republican", August 25, 1902, Pottsville, PA: "Deaths and Funerals" - "Hiram W. PINKERTON residing at 510 W. Arch Street died about 5 o'clock last evening, after an illness of several months, aged 73 years. Mr. PINKERTON was born in Halifax, Dauphin County in 1829. He took up his residence in Tremont in the early 40's, when the town consisted of only a few houses and was known as Sprucetown. He was one of the town's first school teachers, many of his scholars still residing in that section. He was appointed postmaster of Tremont in 1869, under President Lincoln's administration serving in that capacity until 1865. During this period he enlisted as a soldier. He was sergeant of the 39th Pennsylvania Volunteers and orderly sergeant of the 17th Pennsylvania Volunteers. Mr. PINKERTON was a plasterer by trade, and did a great deal of work in that line in the West End. In the last few years that he resided in Tremont he became a Democrat, taking a great deal of interest in local political affairs. He removed to Pottsville about 12 years ago with his two sons, and engaged in the plastering business. Deceased was a member of Gowen Post No. 23 G.A.R. Mr. PINKERTON is survived by his two sons, Cleaver and George. His wife died in Tremont about 25 years ago. He has two brothers, George, postmaster at Wiconisco and Joseph of Lebanon. Col C.L> PINKERTON, a member of the Schuylkill County Bar, who died some years ago at Tremont, was also a brother. Mrs. Hamilton Bailey of Harrisburg who died a week ago, was the only sister. The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon. Interment to be made in the soldiers' plot in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Pottsville."

He was born in Halifax, Dauphin county but at an early age moved to Tremont, where during President Lincoln's administration, he served as postmaster. He also taught school for a number of terms in Tremont, and moved to Pottsville a number of years ago. He served during the Civil War as a sergeant in the Thirty-ninth Pa. Vol., and also as an orderly sergeant in the Seventeenth Pa. Vols. He was a member of Gowen Post No. 23, G.A.R. Two sons survive - Cleaver and George PINKERTON, well known plasterers in town.

PINKERTON" (son of Cyrus Levi PINKERTON) Riverside, California, 1931: "Father (Cyrus Levi PINKERTON) was a prominent Republican, previously a Whig with abolition sympathies. His house was a station of the under-ground railroad and the cellar of our house was an asylum for the negroes who escaped from the South and helped them to reach Canada and freedom. He was a "Know-Nothing" when the Americans feared that the foreign element, imported by business and mine interests would capture the offices of the county, state and nation and menace the Republican form of government. The "Copperheads" and the "Knights of the Golden Circle" threatened the outstanding leaders favorable to the Union with bodily injury or death. We were forced from our home and for some time were in seclusion. Uncle Hiram was a postmaster in these strenuous times and Uncle George was a school teacher."
