"!SOURCE: THE ASSOCIATED CLAN MACLEOD SOCIETIES GENEALOGICAL RESOURCES, The Associated Clan MacLeod
Societies, Edinburgh, Scotland, 2000." MAC-CLURE.
The name MacClure is derived from the Gaelic "Mhic-Gille-Leabbam." meaning son of the servant of the book;
or, in other words, son of the tutor.
The name is mentioned in Scottish records in an entry in the Stirling Kirk Session book, dated 1604, where
reference is made to one Robert MacClure, piper to the Laird of Buchanan. Tradition says that this Robert MacClure was a
son of Tormod Mac-Gille-Leabhar of Kingsburgh, son of Donald, the guardian or tutor of his nephew Tormod, the eleventh
Chief of MacLeod, both of whom were murdered in 1557 by the lain Dubh, the usurping 12th Chief. Robert MacClure was
granted the lands of Glenboig, near Balfron, by Buchanan, and his descendants lived there until the middle of the last
century, when they emigrated to Ireland, and where they are still represented.
There are many of the name of MacClure still in Skye, particularly in the Sleat district, who are surmised to
be actual descendants of the above mentioned Tormod of Kingsburgh, through other sons who adopted their father's by-
name.
In Boswell's "Tour of the Hebrides with Dr. Johnson," appears the following passage: "Captain MacClure, whom
we found here (at the house of Macquarrie of Ulval), was of Scotch extraction, and properly a MacLeod, being descended
of some of the MacLeods who went with Sir Norman of Bernera to the Battle of Worcester, and after the defeat of the
Royalists fled to Ireland; and, to conceal themselves, took a different name." There is a considerable number of the
name in Northern Ireland.--H

Elizabeth:
Elizabeth was alive on May 17, 1792 according to a deed she witnessed along with her husband David.
Also was possible alive 14 Dec 1799 because she is referred to as a widow on a deed processed by her son or
stepson. (See my folder under Deeds and Wills)
According to the1800 Census of Cumberland Co. Pa, Elizabeth probably lived with Wilson, her son, because it
shows 1 female under 45 and 1 female over 45. Wilson was the only one living in the area where David lived. Because
there was a list of everything at the house/farm, they probably sold the farm because none of the children seemed to
want it. They all moved to different areas. There is no record of her with Wilson in the 1810 Census from the same area.
Jane McCormick, David's first wife may have died at the birth of her daughter Jane in 1773. She is not
mentioned in either of her parents wills.

According to the 1810 CENSUS page 33 of Campbell, Kentucky, James had 4 children. James H. is the only one on
record in Campbell Co. Ky. He had one son between 10-16, one son between 16-25, one daughter under 10,one daughter
between 10-16.
According to the deed records and town council records in Alexandria Court House, Alexandria, KY, James sold
some of his property to James Taylor to begin the town of Newport, Ky. He was an active member on this council. He also
seemed to have financial difficulties with his farm.
His brother David Jr. along with James McCormick seemed to have one time came down to visit James and bought
land in the area because there are deeds with his name on it that were also sold to James Taylor for the building of the
town of Newport.
Campbell County Ky Marriages 1795-1850
There is one deed in the folder that has his wife Jane's signature. I found no Will as of yet. There are also
deeds that have James H. signature, who is the son of James McClure (sr.)
James McClure listed as early as 1795 in KY by Court Order Book A, vol.9, #1, p.23
Also James was appointed overseer of streets of Newport in1796.
I have deed that shows James was in the Newport, Ky area in 1797 which is the year after is father died.
Since there are deeds in Carlisle that show James sold his portion of his father's farm in Clearfield Co. Pa. to Thomas
his brother and used his other brother David to serve as proxy , I am assuming he left the Cumberland Co. Pa. area
before 1796 and traveled to Ky.
His marriage to Jane Miles is recorded in the Centre Presbyterian Church Cumberland Co. Pa. by John Linn

History of Campbell Co. Ky" by Jones, pp. 6,7
James McClure was born about 1766 in Sherman's Creek, Cumberland County PA. This farming area is just north
of Carlisle, Pa. James married Jane Miles of Limeston Ridge, Sherman's Creek November 21, 1786 at the Centre
Presbyterian Church by John Linn. They had a daughter Sarah in 1789 and a son James H. in 1792.
Sometime between 1792 and 1795, James and Jane decided to move westward. They might have traveled the
Cumberland Road that was an Indian trail that went west toward Pittsburg and then taking the Ohio River to Newport. What
made him stop in this area, rather than staying in Pittsburg or any other pleasing spot along the Ohio River is not
known. He bought some property in Newport in 1795 and sold it to James Talor who made plans for the town of Newport.
James also borrowed money from other local farmers to mortgage a farm of 98 acres. There are many deed, tax
and official local government papers that help give a picture of his struggles there. James became one of the town's
early trustee. He held meetings at his house, helped survey roads and participated in the development of Newport's early
days. His brother David even traveled to Newport to visit and ended up buying several lots in the newly planned town,
which he sold later at a profit.
James didn't seem to have the same business sense that his brother David had. From deeds and tax information
it seems that James had financial difficulties since he bought his farm. There were several years that he was in arrears
with his land taxes. There were indications that he borrowed or loaned monies that he had to go to court over. He
dropped out of his earlier position as a trustee when he began to have financial difficulties.
