17."Lykens Standard", Vol 3, No 47, Friday, December 20, 1901. "THROUGH A BRIDGE TO DEATH" "The Philadelphia and Erie Railroad bridge across Lycoming Creek, near Williamsport, was the scene of a serious wreck about 6:20 o'clock Sunday morning. The heavy rains of Friday night and Saturday had so swollen the stream that the bridge was weakened and when train No. 83, better known as the Oyster Train, west bound, ran out on the structure it gave way and the engine and nine cars went into the creek, carrying the engineer, John MARTZ, Fireman Frederick GLASS and Breakman, John H. HORLEY down with them and up to the time of going to press their bodies had not been recovered. Two of the victims of the disaster were formerly residents of this place. Engineer John MARTZ and Brakeman John H. HORLEY. News of the terrible affair reached Henry MARTZ, father of the former and John BAINBRIDGE, his father-in-law, early Sunday morning and rapidly was communicated to all parts of town, causing a feeling of sadness and sympathy for the bereaved families on every hand. John MARTZ was the son of Henry and Sarah MARTZ and was born in Washington Township February 4, 1866. His parents came to Lykens when he was quite young, and his father being employed on the Summit Branch Railroad as a brakeman, the young man naturally inclined toward the same vocation and as soon as eligible went on the same road and after four years service as a brakeman and fireman was transferred to Sunbury and promoted to an engineer. He was considered one of the best engineers on the Eastern Division and was well and favorably known, numbering his friends by the score. He resided on Fourth Street, Sunbury and had been railroading about 13 years, nine of which as an engineer. He married Anna Bainbridge of this place about 13 years abo, who with three children, one boy and two girls, his father, one brother and two sisters survive to mourn his loss..."
18."Lykens Standard", Vol 4, No 7, Sunday, March 14, 1902: RECEIVED $3000 INSURANCE "Mrs. John MARTZ of Fourth Street, Sunbury, last week received a check from the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers of that place for $3000 insurance for her husband, who met his death at the Lycoming Creek Bridge Disaster on Sunday morning, December 15, Mrs. MARTZ will also receive $700 from the PRR Relief Fund."
19."Lykens Standard", Vol 4, No 14, May 2, 1902: "JOHN MARTZ'S BODY RECOVERED Brought to this Place for Burial on Wednesday The Body of Engineer John MARTZ who together with his firman, Frederick GLASS and brakeman John HORLEY all of Sunbury were killed last December by the giving way of the bridge over Lycoming Creek was found Monday morning in the river a few miles below Williamsport. His bouse had caught on the limb of a sunken tree and the floating corpse which had been taken for a floating boom log, had been seen by railroad men for the past few weeks. Horley's body was recovered on December 26th and brought to this place, his former home for burial. Engineer MARTZ and Fireman GLASS were very similar in many respects - they were about the same size and weight, same color hair and both slightly bald and when the body was found Monday, it was not at first certain whether it was that of the former or the latter. The clothes indicated, however, that he was a railroad man, and the identity of the body was afterward established by his fellow workmen at Sunbury, also by his wife, who remembered the clothing he wore on that ill-fated trip. HE also had the figure of Liberty tatooed on his left arm. His gloves were still upon his shriveled hands and when they were withdrawn revealed the fact that the fingers were all intact, whereas GLASS had three fingers taken off the left hand in a railway accident a number of years ago. The corpse was given in charge of an undertaker and prepared for burial. Services were conducted at the home of the deceased in Sunbury on Wednesday morning by Rev. Stein of the ME Church of that place, after which the body was sent to this place in a special car, accompanied by his wife and children and a large number of friends. On the arrival of the train, the corpse was taken to the undertaking establishment of J.S. Reiff, where it remained until the time of the funeral, 2:30pm. The cortege started from the residence of Mrs. Martz's parents on Main Street and proceeded to the U.B. Church where services were conducted, Revs. A.H. SOUILLARD of Myerstown, STEIN of Sunbury and Z.A. WEIDLER of this place each participating after which interment took place in Odd Fellows Cemetery. The music was furnished by the M.E. Choir of Sunbury and the male quartet of the U.B. Church. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers of Sunbury had charge of the funeral and conducted the services at the grave. The pallbearers, ten in number, were his crew and members of the brotherhood. The floral offerings consisted of carnations and ferns from Mrs. John Horley; Gates Ajar from Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers No 250; beauty roses from Mrs. B. WHEELAND and family; pillow, "Our Papa" from his children; new moon and crescent from his crew; sheaf of wheat from John BAINBRIDGE.
