P567. "BAILEY, Hamilton, patentee of the celebrated Eureka coal wagon, was born in Scotland, June 8, 1833 and is the son
of James and Mary HAMILTON BAILEY, who were also natives of Scotland. He received his education in the public schools of
Schuylkill County, PA, having been brought to America in early boyhood. At Tremont, Schuylkill County, PA he learned the
trade of wheelwright and blacksmith with Silas BALL of that place. In 1858, he began business for himself in the county
where he learned his trade, and his business career, extended over a period of nearly forty years, has been of
satisfactory results. He patented the Eureka coal wagon, and is now devoting his time to its sale together with that of
wood and coal in Harrisburg, where he has been living for a number of years. Mr. Bailey is a Republican in politics and
takes a deep interest in public affairs, although not an office seeker. He is a member of the Knights Templar. He was
married to Catharine, daughter of George and Margaret (WRIGHT) PINKERTON, by whom he has three children: Dr. Milton R.,
Arthur Hamilton, and Minnie Elizabeth/ Mr. Bailey and family adhere to the Methodist Episcopal church.

Hamilton BAILEY, wife of the well known wagon manufacturer, died very suddenly last evening at the BAILEY cottage at the
Pennsylvania Chautauqua at Mt. Gretna, where she was spending the summer. Mrs. BAILEY had been apparently in her usual
health and was on her way to the evening concert when taken suddenly ill death following fifteen minutes later. The
cause of her death was heart failure, superinduced by asthma, to attacks of which she had long been subject. The remains
were brought to her home on Locust Street, this city this morning. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed.
Mrs. BAILEYS death was a great shock to her many friends in this city, as well as amoung the cottagers at Mt. GRETNA,
where she was very well known."

BAILEY DIES FROM STROKE Veteran Business Man Succumbs to Stroke While Enjoying Usual Health Hamilton BAILEY, a well
known retired business man of this city, died at his home, 126 Locust Street, at 8 o/clock yesterday morning as the
result of a severe stroke of apoplexy Wednesday morning. Mr. BAILEY'S death was sudden despite the fact that he was
within a few weeks of being 80 years old. Up until the time of he was seized with the apoplexy, he was in remarkable,
health for his age. Mr. BAILEY was a resident of this city from Civil War days. In that time he was a blacksmith by
trade and later became the inventor of the Eureka Coal Wagon, a type used all over the United States. He was born in
Ayrshire, Scotland, June 8, 1833, and when aa youth came to this country with his parents. He came to this city in 1863
and set up as a blacksmith and coach maker. His knowledge of his trade led him to invent the Eureka Coal Wagon and after
it was patented, he established a plant in this city to manufacture them. He has built thousands of these wagons since
then, and they are used extensively in large cities and country towns. Up until fifteen years ago, he was active in
business but at that time his son, Arthur H. BAILEY, County Treasurer, was taken into the business. Mr. BAILEY was
married to Miss Katherine PINKERTON of Halifax township. His wife died in 1902. Two children: Arthur H. BAILEY, Dauphin
County Treasurer and Minnie E. BAILEY survive. Four grandchildren, the children of Dr. M.R. BAILEY, a deceased son of
Mr. BAILEY, survive. They live in East Peoria, Indiana. Mr. BAILEY was a member of Pilgrim Commandery, No 11, F. and
A>M>, and the local order of Heptasopha. He was a member of Grace Methodist Church. The funeral services will be held
from the home at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. The funeral in all probability will be in charge of the Harrisburg lodge
of Masons. The Rev. Dr. John D. FOX, pastor of Grace Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be made in the
Harrisburg Cemetery."
