!Birth: Violet Morton has bd 8 Nov 1805: Effie Kirk has 8 Feb 1805.
!Anderson Co. TN deed book H-1 p. 46 John Kirk to Alexander Kirk (film #979,338).
Alexander Kirk was living in Monroe Co., Indiana in 1830.
!Burial: Buried in Kees Cemetery, Umatilla Co., OR.; remains removed Nov 1990 and
reburied in the Athena Cemetery, according to Ivan F. Duff letter to Patricia R. Chambers
Kirk Pence, 5 Sep 1991. He is buried with three of his grandchildren. The removal was done
to prevent further vandalism of the grave at the Kees (Keyes) Cemetery.
!Effie Kirk genealogy; There is another child listed in IGI: John W. Kirk b. 1829 in
TN; md. n.d. Catherine. from Tuck Forsythe: IGI source film: LDS FHL 1553692 made Nov 1988
batch 600188 sheets 1-30, by Carolyn C. Lundgren 365 E. 1500 South, Bountiful, UT 84010.
Her data only slightly improved from Linn Co. Pioneer Books vols. 1-11. This John W. KIRK
may well come in the gap in this family record between Mary Ann "Polly" KIRK (later
FINLEY) b. 29 Aug 1827 and Henry Harrison Kirk b. 16 Apr 1836. I got these children's
info. both from Brownsville Pub. Lib. and Census, not from IGI I don't think. Violet
Morton has another daughter, Catherine, b. 1846 and believes Catherine may have been the
daughter of Maria Coyle.
!Alexander Kirk took out Oregon Donation Land Claim # 1598. Source: Oregon Donation
Land Claim #1598
!Alexander Kirk was the first of the Kirks to come into Linn Co. His first wife was
Sarah "Sallie" Sweeten (b. 14 May 1811; d. 29 May 1858 in Linn Co.). He had lived first in
Anderson Co., TN, where the two eldest children were born, then in 1830 is found in Monroe
Co., IN, and then 1839 in Platte Co., MO. Alexander Kirk came to Oregon in the first wagon
train to use the Barlow Road around the Cascades. In the present Brownsville area he set
up a ferry across the Calapooia River. His nephew John Wesley Kirk (my 2ggf) came to
Oregon by train in 1870. In 1871 Alexander Kirk removed to Umatilla County. He died there
19 Mar 1877 and is presently buried in the Athena Cemetery.
!Birth, etc.: Possibly born in Campbell Co., Tn, rather than Anderson Co. Sister
of Margaret "Peggy" Sweeten, wife of Alexander Kirk's brother Jonathan. Son Leander Kirk
recalls in interview with Fred Lockley that she died on his birthday (which was May 29) in
1858. Biog. info. on file in Brownsville Pub. Lib., which is my source for her death date.
There is a photo of Sarah Sweeten Kirk on file in the Linn County Historical Museum; I
asked Dick Milligan to send me a copy 13 Jul 1998. He didn't do it.
!Burial: Brownsville Pioneer Cemetery, Block 4, West, lot 8, 35' x 10' (Alex Kirk):
"Kirk, Sarah, Wife of Alex, 14 May 1811 - 29 May 1858 [First wife of Alex]"
