There is a very real possibility that there are two H C Ulmans who were born in September of 1831-1835 in Pennsylvania and became lawyers. However, Hezekiah is not a common name so I believe that the son of L and Lydia on the 1850 Census married Ella Fairbanks and fathered at least two sons. He later married Alice, who drew on his pension from his service in the Civil War. I cannot be sure that he married Lizzie Keen and fathered two daughters but I think he did.

If there is only one H C Ulman, he first married Lizzie and had two girls, Katherine Keen (Kate) Ulman, who never married and Alice Keen Ulman who married military officer Robert Read in 1906. Charles then married Ella and had the two boys, Robert and Douglas. After the split, Ella went back to using Fairbanks for herself and the boys, although each of the boys used Ullman Fairbanks on some of their documents. There is also a son, Henry Ulman, age 18, on the 1885 Census in Denver and I don't know who he is unless it's John Henry Fairbanks. Charles is listed on the census with Lizzie until 1900. It's possible that they divorced and Charles supported her and the girls all that time and Lizzie continued to list him as her husband.

This is one of the most confusing families I have traced and no one should use this material without checking it for themselves.

Ella married John Fairbanks and had a child, John Jr. Her husband died and his partners cheated her out of her money so she hired a lawyer - H Charles Ulman. Charles didn't manage to get her the money and she married Edward Wilcox of Georgia. After that split, she left her second child, Norris Wilcox, in Georgia with a cousin and moved in with Charles in New York by 1880.
