In the Probate Court
Be it Remembered that on this 22nd day of August 1879 before me S. M. Grigsby Judge and
Clerk of the Probate Court of Sullivan County Missouri personally appeared William Oliver
who being duly sworn on his deposeth and sayeth that he was present and saw [struck out]
heard the undersigned John Shepherd publish and declare the above and foregoing instrument
to be this last will and testament and that at the time of signing the same the said John
Shepherd was of sound and and desposing mind and that this Witness signed the same in the
presence and at the request of the said testator.
William H. Oliver
subscribed and sworn before me this 22nd day of August 1879
S. M. Grigsby Judge of Probate (2)
Death (26 Jul 1879):(3)
General: On the 1850 census he is in Box 420, page 318 with the wife and kids. This is the
source for place and date of birth. He is listed as a farmer and a carpenter for
professions. The census taker spelled the name Shepard. On the 1860 census he is listed
with a birth date of 1809. The ages of people was never consistent in the Shepherd Family.
He is buried on the old Shepherd farm with a headstone - but part of it is broken so it is
not possible to read exact date. The dates of birth and death are from the index done on
the cemetery in 1953 when many of the headstones were standing.
The property is now owned by his great granddaughter - Julie Fields Taylor andher husband,
Wes. They are restoring the house.
I found the marriage of Sally Oliver and Wm. Shepherd in Rockingham Co., N.C. date not
mentioned in EARLY FAMILIES OF N.C. Co. of ROCKINGHAM AND STOKES W/REV. WAR SERVICE, VOL.
2, DAR 1990. This may prove valuable later.
The date was 1809 per Mormon film records - their source not mentioned.
[SOURCE: Marriage of John and Margaret Hays is recorded in the 372 MISSING ROCKINGHAM
COUNTY MARRIAGE BONDS; COMPILED BY DON HOOVER; JOURNAL OF ROCKINGHAM, N.C., ROCKINGHAM
HISTORICAL SOCIETY, VOL 13 #1, June 1988.]
Per the 1877 Atlas for Sullivan Co. John Shepherd came to Mo. in 1842.
Since John named his first son William this is a strong possibility. There was also a
John Shepherd in Rockingham Co. during the time that William is listed.
It is not known if that John is his father or brother. After checking the 1810 census for
Rockingham Co., N.C. I found that John is older than William. THEREFORE: it is possible
that William and Sally Oliver Shepherd are the parents of John Shepherd. It is also
possible that John Shepherd is the father of Wm., who married Sally Oliver and fathered
John (3rd gen.) - IT IS NOT PROVED YET!!
I have gone ahead and listed William as father to John for the following reasons
1) William is in right Co. and married in 1808 to Sarah (Sally Oliver, dau of James.
2) John is born in 1809.
3) No other Shepherd in Co. during time period.
4) John names first daughter Sarah / Williams wife is named Sarah on 1850 census.
5) John names his first son William.

Wife Notes: Margaret S. (Peggy) HAYES
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Birth (1808):(4)
Death (3 Mar 1893):(5)
General: per 1850 census; Rockingham Co., N.C. will of her father. She is listed in her
father's will as Peggy - the nickname for Margaret. It appears that she was the youngest
of the children by virtue of her listing in the order of children. Three of her sisters
were already married in 1834. Her first two children were born in N.C.. The family
arrived in Mo. in 1849. She and her husband are buried in the family cemetery on the old
Shepherd farm with headstones. I don't know what the S. initial stands for - could be
Sarah. Her newspaper obit in the Sullivan Standard/ Milan Repbulican stated that she was
a early pioneer of Sullivan Co., Mo. Her age was listed as 85 years.
