* Josiah Chatham was born in Virginia per the 1850 Mississippi Census. He traveled with his
parents at an early age to the State of Georgia. His parents were Epps and Sarah "Sally" Chatham,
who lived in Franklin County, Georgia. Josiah Chatham married Isabel CALLAWAY in Wilkes County,
Georgia and lived there for several years before moving on to Butts County, Georgia circa 1824. In
1840 they were living in Henry County, Georgia and by 1849 the family moved to Hinds County,
Mississippi per the 1850 Census. Josiah Chatham is believed to have served in the War of 1812,
serving as a Private in the 2nd Regt. (Thomas') of the Georgia Militia. His name is listed as Josiah
Cheetham. The family name in records has been listed as CHEATHAM, CHATHAM, CHEETHAM. It later years
the Mississippi family was listed as CHATHAM and used this version of the name. Josiah Chatham was a
farmer and small slave owner, owning about six slaves. He is believed to have died by 1862; however,
his probate records start in 1867 and was not settled until the mid 1870's. His wife Isabel died in
1870. Both are believed to be buried on or near their property in unmarked graves in Hinds County,
Mississippi. Several of his sons served in the Confederate Army. They have numerous descendants in
Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi.
