Samuel Mentzer
Samuel Mentzer, a wellknown resident and gardner, died at his hame in Wayside
avenue, of general debility, aged 80 years. He had been ill about three days
and up until that time he had been going about as usual. Deceased was a
regular attendant on market. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
The survivors are the following children: Mrs. Lewis Leiter, Mrs. V. T.
Meredith, Mrs. Harry Smith, this city; Miss Bessie, at home; Samuel and
Joseph, this city; James of Baltimore; brothers, Lewis Mentzer, this city;
Daniel, Edgemont; Christian, Williamsport. His wife died in 1893. The funeral
will take place Saturday at 2 o'clock from the house, services by Rev. G. S.
Bowers, interment in Rose Hill. Pallbearers are four grandsons, Edward, Roy,
Frank Leiter, H. Lionel Meredith.

Death of Mrs. Mentzer
Mrs. Julia Ann Mentzer residing on Wayside Avenue, died yesterday evening in
the seventy-second year of her age, at about 5:30 p. m. Her death resulted
from general debility. Mr. Samuel Mentzer, her husband, with four daughters
and three sons are left to mourn her loss.
The daughters are Mrs. Leiter, Mrs. B. F. Meredith, Mrs. Maggie Smith, and
Bessie; the sons are Samuel, Joseph and George.
The funeral will take place on Friday (to-morrow) at 2 p. m., services at the
residence by Rev. Mr. Bateman, interment in Rose Hill. The pall bearers will
be Peter Eshleman, Silas Beard, Judge Dunkle and John Shroder.

aged 50 years. He is survived by one son, Irving and a daughter, Hazel of

Samuel Mentzer was born in Leitersburg District, January 27, 1822, the son of John and Catherine (Beaver) Mentzer. He was reared in his native District and obtained a common school education. After teaching one term at the local school he located at Ringgold, Md, in 1843; here he resided until 1856 and was successively engaged in butchering, merchandising, and coach making. He was then employed for ten years as a cooper at the mill north of Leitersburg owned by his brother, Daniel Mentzer. In 1866 he located at Hagerstown, where he has since been engaged in business as a market gardener. In 1842 he married Julia, daughter of Benjamin and Judith (Leiter) Hartman, and their children are James A,; Samuel C.; Joseph C.; Sarah E., wife of Louis Leiter; Catherine A., wife of Veniah Meredith; Bessie F. ;Margaret M., wife of Harry Smith, and Lola Lucy, deceased. Mr. Mentzer is a Democrat in politics and a member of the Lutheran Church.
