Sources on John Henry Crumbaugh:
* Confederate Pension Application filed May 20, 1912 and approved June 21, 1912. Shows John H. Crumbaugh of Georgetown, Scott County, served in "Breckinridge's Regiment, 9th Kentucky Cavalry, A Company." It says he was born in Scott County on September 30, 1830, enlisted in the fall of 1862 and surrendered at Washington, NC in 1865. It also said he was a bachelor with no income whatsoever and had lived in KY all his life. This part is a printed form with the answers handwritten. Later in the file is a typed page that lists him as John W. Crumbaugh. Still further is another typed page that says he enlisted September 15, 1862 and surrendered at Washington, GA, May 10, 1865, taking the oath of allegiance at Nashville, TN on May 20, 1865 and was then released. Note the discrepancy in where he surrendered - NC/GA (there are Washington's in both states but I know Jefferson Davis and his group did go thru the one in GA when fleeing Richmond - so maybe GA is right). A regimental history from the Civil War Soldier and Sailor site on the internet says: 9th Cavalry Regiment [also called 4th Mounted Rifles] was organized in December, 1862, by consolidating Breckinridge's and Stoner's Kentucky Cavalry Battalions. The regiment served in J.W. Grigsby's, J.S. Williams', and J.H. Lewis' Brigade, skirmished in Kentucky and Tennessee, and fought in the Atlanta Campaign. It continued the conflict by sharing in the defense of Savannah and the campaign of the Carolinas. A detachment surrendered with the Army of Tennessee, but the main part of the unit escorted President Davis southward and surrendered in May, 1865. Colonel William C.P. Breckinridge, Lieutenant Colonel Robert G. Stoner, and Majors John P. Austin and William E. Jones were in command.

Unit: Buckner's Guards KY Cavalry & 1st (Dobbin's) Arkansas Cavalry company A Pension # - 2081 Application: Bracken County - 1913
Pension record contains an affidavit of Sue Crumbaugh saying he was discharged from the Buckner Guards at Knoxville, TN on October 22, 1862. He had joined that unit on August 24, 1862 at Big Hill, KY. He later joined Dobbins' unit. Mrs. Crumbaugh's affidavit, also states "My husband was in Camp Chase. I heard from him while there." Camp Chase was located near Columbus, Ohio and held political prisoners and prisoners of war during the war - so he evidently spent some time as a prisoner of war.
