* Robert R. Skelton served in the Civil War as a Private, Company A, 58th Regiment, Indiana Infantry, volunteer. He enrolled at Princeton, Gibson, Indiana on 26 Aug 1862. He was mustered in on 8 Sep 1862 in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana. He was mustered out 4 Jun 1865 after having served three years. His Descriptive Roll Card gives his age as 33 years, Farmer, 3 yr enlistment, Eyes blue, Hair sandy, Complexion fair, Height 5' 8" tall; On Stragglers Roll Card it gives the information that Robert R. was 34 yrs of age, Eyes blue, Hair brown, Complexion Dark, Height 5' 8"; Born Warrick Co., IN; Occupation Miller; Muster Roll Cards show him present except Apr 1864 absent sick in Ind., May 1864 absent sick, Jun 1864, absent on duty in Chattanooga, Jul 1864 absent sick & wounded; June 1865 Mustered Out. One roll card indicates mustered out at Lousiville, Jefferson, Kentucky and another Roll Card indicates mustered out Washington D.C.. On 21 Nov 1865. Robert R. Skelton applied for Pension from Sullivan, Moultrie, Illinois. He also declared he was discharged in Washington D.C. He declared that he was partially disabled due to chronic diarrhea and also contracted smallpox which affected his eyes. His 2nd wife nancy J. Breeden Montgomery applied for pension. She was dropped from the Pension Rolls after last payment of $25.00 on 4 Nov 1918. She was dropped because of her death on 30 Dec 1918. The death of Nancy J Birchfield Skelton was given by Nancy J Breedon Mongomery Skelton in her appplication for Pension of Robert R. Skelton's Service in the Civil War.
* The 1st child Sarah Elizabeth Skelton was killed when thrown from a buggy because of her runaway horse. It seems she liked to be out in her buggy and raced all over the county. Am unable to prove or disprove this family story.
