* The following is from an email of Melvin "Pat" Voyles at pat@ina.net from Jan. 1999: My father was Thomas
Wilmer Voyles born March 17, 1899 in or around Ripley or Myrtle MS. He died in 1976. My grandfather was George
Washington Voils. He was born in 1864 in or around Ripley or Myrtle, MS. He was married twice. They had one daughter,
Laura Gussie Voils, born ca 1886. My grandmother was Annie Davis Voils. The rest of my aunts and uncles are; Aunt Dovie
Voils born 1894; my uncle Luther Ellis Voils born 1896; my Audie Voils born 1893; Uncle Guv Voils. born ?; my uncle
Pearl Voils born 1902; Don R. Voils, born ?; my aunts Junnie and Rubby Voils, born ?. In 1900 my grandparents farmed in
the lower southeast corner of Tippah Co., MS. Harvey fought with the 26th Infantry MS. He enlisted along with two
brothers Albert Voyles born in GA 1850 and James Voyles born 1841 in Hall Co., GA. They all enlisted in Iuka MS on Aug.
16, 1861. Harvey fought in many battles; Fort Donelson, 2/13, 14th, 15th, 1862. He was gone during the surrender of Fort
Donelson on Feb. 16, 1862. He also fought in the battle of Coffeeville, Dec. 5,1862 and the battle of Willow Springs May
3, 1862. He fought and was captured at the battle of Bakers Creek, May 16, 1863. Harvey was attached to the 26th MS
Calvary. The 26th was engaged in other major battles; Jackson, MS from July 9th to 16th. The Wilderness May 5-6, 1864.
Tally's Mill May 10, 1864; Spotsylvania Courthouse May 12, 1864, Hanover Junction May 23, 1864; Cold Harbor June 2-3,
1864; Gaines Mill from June 5-13, 1864. In front of Petersburg, August 20th to Sept. 29, 1864; Waldon Railroad August

1864; Hatcher's Run Feb. 6, 1865. After the battle of Baker's Creek also known as Champion Hill, Harvey appears on a
roll of Prisoners of War at Point Lookout, MD. It shows him in Elmira, New York. He was exchanged Oct. 29, 1864 at Fort
Delaware, Delaware. Other records show that he escaped from Fort Donalson Feb., 1862. So he must have been captured in
that battle also. My father told me many stories as a young boy regarding my great grandfather. He told me that he had
killed many Yankees. I can only remember one story that went like this. Harvey and two other soldiers most likely his
two brothers were in a battle when they found themselves lost from the rest of the unit. On foot they found an old
church and climbed into the tower. After awhile three Yankees rode up on horseback. He said Harvey and the others had to
pick out which soldier they would shoot as the only one had one shot each. They did and killed the Yankees. They
searched them and took what they could use and rode back to their unit line on the horses. Harvey's brothers and sister
were: Guilford Voyles born 1843 in Hall Co., GA. Jasper Voyles born 1844 in Hall Co., GA. Twins: George Washington
Voyles and Jackson Voyles born March 4, 1847. Newt Voyles born in GA. Harvey had one sister, Emily Voyles, born 1849.
