Documentation:
* Most of the dates are directly from U.S. Census documents online, which are supported by listings in the family
Bible. Some dates are off by a year or so.
* The names of all listed here were commonly known, as siblings and other relatives visited and communicated
regularly during their lifetimes.
* With the exception of my great-grandmother, Monteray Thomas, who married Matison Atkins, I have little information
about the children of Almarinda W. Newton Thomas. I am very eager to learn the maiden name of Almarinda's mother Nancy
Stewart, a.k.a. Muddy.
* According to Census records, Nancy Stewart was born in South Carolina, as were her parents. Although Nancy Stewart
is listed as "white" in all Census records, I have a strong belief she was either Cherokee or Creek, making her Native
American. I base this on my own grandmother's statements about being "one-sixteenth Cherokee," but she would never
discuss this further. (Since Nancy was her grandmother, the math works out accurately.)
* According to a distant cousin, Nancy Stewart's husband, William Stewart, came to America from Scotland, supposedly
to look for gold; he was killled in l864 in Walker County, although I have no other information on him, his life or his
death. I do know the family spent most of its years in Walker County, Georgia, around Frick's Gap, according to the
Census. Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga, Tennessee, were prominent in the family's lives, as well, which my 82-year-old
mother discusses with us.
