* William Ward grew up in Coffee Co., Georgia. After growing into manhood he came to
Florida and married Rosetta Jones. In 1818 they settled in Middleburg, FL where all of
their children were born. About 1840 he moved his family in a covered wagon to settle on a
homestead on the Sante Fe River near present day Brooker, FL in Bradford County. He
established a fort there named Fort Ward during the Seminole Indian War. He was active in
the early government of Florida signing a petition in 1832 asking for an appointment of
Col James Gadsden as Governor of Florida.
