George Landsbright PENDARVIS, Lake Placid Area Pioneer Dies: Was 96 born: Dec 20, 1863
One of Lake Placid's, and oldest resident, GEORGE Landsbright PENDARVIS, 96, passed
away quietly at 5:am Wednesday at his home here. Mr. PENDARVIS had been in failing heath
for some time and seriously ill for several weeks. He lived in Lake Placid for 35 years.
Born in Newmanville, Alachua, Co., Florida on Dec 26, 1863 -during the civil war- he was
the eighth of nine children to Joseph James PENDARVIS and Nancy WILLIAMS PENDARVIS. Both
of his parents died when Mr. PENDARVIS was a small child and he was raised by an older
brother. He was first married to Susie BENEDICT, who died shortly after the birth of their
only child, Roy. Mr. PENDARVIS first visited the sand hills of Lake Placid shortly after
the turn of the century. He returned in the 1920's and purchased the land of a former
neighbor when they both lived in Sumpter Co, Mr.Drew TOWNS. Mr TOWNS had planted orange,
lemon, and lime groves. On the homestead, Mr. PENDARVIS helped produce the first "Tahiti"
variety of limes in Florida. Mr. PENDARVIS was a member of the "Woodmen of the World", and
First Baptist Church of Lake Placid. Surviving in addition to is widow are his son Roy, of
Lake Placid: four grandchildren, a stepdaughter Gertrude. And 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, afternoon at 2:30 at First Baptist Church of Lake
Placid with the Rev. D.C. Spillman officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Stevenson's Funeral Home of Sebring had charge of arrangements.
