* Martin J. Griner - Farmed in Berrien Co., Member of First Board of Educ. In Berrien Co., Methodist Ran away from home and lied about his age to join military. Too young to fight. Served as Drummer Boy. Served in 29th Volunteer Regiment Infantry from Berrin Co. during Civil War under Gen. R.E. Lee in Army of Northern VA. Wittnessed the accidential shooting and death of General Stonewall Jackson.
* Olive/Oliff Nash Griner was a Midwife and never accepted any pay for the many babies she delivered in Berrien Co. She was a faithful member of Nashvill First Baptist Church where she raised most of her children. Her husband was always a member of the Methodist Church, and some of the children went to church with him.
* William Futch - He was Berrien Co Tax Collector. Was playing cards and drinking with some other men who got him drunk.. He told them the combination to the Court House Safe and they later broken in a stole all of the money in the safe. He was blamed and served a prison term even though he did not participate in the robbery. Martin J. Griner was on his bond and had to sell a large track of his land to pay off Futch’s bond.
