Notes:
* John Henry Magill was born in 1843 in Clay Co, MO but his family moved soon after to the Kansas Territory. there was terrible strife and conflict in Kansas prior to the Civil War so the Magills moved on to Texas. In 1860 John was living in Cooke Co, TX and John met 1st wife, Mary Boston in 1864 here. In 1864 John also enlisted in Col. James Bourland's 44th Texas Regiment div. in Gainesville, TX. During the conflicts, John was shot in the left knee, a wound which troubled him all of his life. He share a tent with his father at times during the Civil War when John was sent with his regiments to watch over the TX frontier and it's settlements from Indian raids. In 1865, John was discharged. The family had a Confederate Medal in an old Bible but that has not been found. In 1868 his wife, Mary Boston died along with their newborn child in Cooke Co, TX. He left for Milam Co. in 1870 and built a home with his parents on 360 acres which was originally part of J. R. Cockerell survey in the Marlow Community. The area around then soon became known as the town of Magill. He bought 61 acres out of his father's property for $1. an acre in 1973 and married at age 31 in 1874 to Mary Catherine Posey, age 19. He was a farmer and rancher for most of his life. In 1880 they family had $10 worth of farm implements, $226 of farm production sold and $110 of livestock. The livestock included 1 horse, 5 milk cows, 5 cattle, 1 calf dropped, 2 cows slaughtered, 14 swine and 25 poultry. They produced and sold 100 lbs of butter, 75 dozen eggs, 100 bushesl of Indian corn, 40 bushels of oats, 31 bushels of wheat and 2 bales of cotton. His daughter, Sarah Emaline, met and married in Milam Co in 1890 Henry Clay BYARS. Henry was the son of Daniel Webster BYARS who served with John Henry in the Confederate War and happened to visit the Magill's in the summer of 1890 with his family. Abt 1894 John had sold his property in Magill and moved to Waco, McLennan Co, TX. The family was Baptist. In 1899 John applied for a disability pension because his knee led to a bad physical condition. Also he suffered from piles and Gravel (heart problems?). He owned very little ($100 worth). He was approved for pension in 1900 in McLennan Co, TX. In 1902 Mary and John signed a deed transferring her father's property in Cameron, Milam Co, TX to her brother. Between 1911 or 1912 they lived in Alvord, Wise Co, TX. Abt 1911-1912 they moved to Houston, Harris County, TX with probably 3 children. In 1914 John applied for another Tx Pension becuase of his disability. The doctors found him total incapacitated and entirely helpless. He had a rupture on back and sides, chronic systitis, rhematish, indigestion and the usual infirmities of advanced age at age 69. His pension was continued. Abt 1917 his daughter, Sarah E. Magill BYARS moved to Houston to be close to her parents with her children after divorcing her husband Henry. John died in 1919 of diabets and Bryhts Disease. He was 73 years. His wife, Mary, lived 15 years longer.
