William M. Griffiths was born in Wales on December 8, 1867 and came to
the United States in 1883 (probably 15 or years old) with his parents (searching for
names) and settled in Tennessee. He attended the Moody Bible Institute and came to South
Dakota in 1893 (statehood 1889) as an Indian Missionary. He was married to Martha Garbold
on Christmas day of 1893. They moved to Leslie, S. D. and ran an Indian Mission school for
9 years. He then went into the merchandising business along with ranching. He served a
good many years on the school board, was county commissioner of old Stanley county and
served 6 terms as State Representative of Haakon, Stanley and Armstrong counties.
Four children were born to them. His wife and three sons preceded him
in death. He has one son living, Evan of Custer, So. Dak. He died December 30th, 1950 at
Cherry Creek, S.D. He has one sister, Mrs. Kate Denham of Williamsburg, Kentucky.
