Andrew died at the age of 29 from an accident three weeks before his youngest son was
born.

   Elizabeth's oldest son, Hugh died of heat exhaustion during the Battle of Stono
Ferry. In 1781, Andrew and Robert were captured and both boys contracted smallpox while
imprisoned at Charleston Harbor. Andrew refused to polish the boots of a British officer
and was slashed across the face and left hand with a sword.
   Robert died of smallpox shortly after his mother arranged for his release. Elizabeth
died of cholera while nursing sick and injured soldiers. Andrew's mistreatment and the
deaths of his family caused his great hatred of the British. [Wikipedia]
