Research of B. F. McDonald, & Gary Finckle. Muskingum Co., Ohio marriage and cemetery records. The family name is spelled Lovett, Lovet, Lovitt. Daniel Lovett was an early settler of Muskingum County, Ohio: Resided Maryland untill 1810. Resided Jackson, Muskingum, Ohio 1810-1821. Owned land on east central edge of Jackson township. Daniel Lovitt born 15 May 1769, Montgomery, Westmoreland, MD7 , occupation Minister and Farmer, married 11 Sep 1794, in Allegany Co, MD, Mary James8 , born 10/15 Jun 1776,7 (daughter of Evan James and Anne Foreman) died 10 May 1841, Muskingum Co, OH. Daniel died 27/28 Sep 1821, Muskingum Co, OH.9 Daniel was listed in the 1800 Maryland, Allegany Co, Census, as being aged between 26 & 45, with 2 males under 10, 2 females under 10, one female (presumed to be his wife, Mary) aged 26-45, and one female over 45 (presumed to be his widowed mother, Susannah). Daniel moved his family to Jackson Township, Muskingum Co, Ohio in the year 1810. 9 In the early 1800's, vast tracts of public land went on sale in Zanesville for $2.00 per acre, making it much cheaper than the land available in Maryland. Travel from Maryland to Ohio, however, was not easy. Roads were crude and the settlers had heavy wagons and - and in Daniel's case - small children to transport. Settlers had to cross the mountains using old trails and military roads. From the Ohio River at Wheeling, W.VA., the settlers followed Zane's Trace to Zanesville where they scouted out a good location and purchased the land. From that point, they would fan out into the forest following courses of streams and crude trails left by Indians, buffalo, and hunters. Daniel was a Minister of the Missionary Baptist Church, and preached the gospel in both Maryland and Ohio. 9 In 1815, he was one of the Licking township officers, a supervisor who was paid the sum of $3.00 per year for his service. On 22 Nov 1815, a Land Patent from the state of Maryland was granted to Daniel for his father's original land, Military lots #3735 and #3736 in Allegany County, Maryland. From Allegany Co, MD Deeds Lib H, Fol. 371, made 28 Nov 1815, recorded 10 Jan 1816, Daniel Lovett and Mary his wife of Muskingum Co, Jackson Twp, OH, sells one child's part of land that Evan James, father of the above named Mary, "died possessed in fee simple of". The sale was made to John Poland (sadler) of Allegany Co, MD, Mary's brother-in-law. In May, 1817, Daniel obtained a permanent lease of the west half of the SW quarter of Section 15, twp 3, range 8 of U.S. Military tract. The lease was for 99 years, renewable forever, yearly payments based on the valuation of the land to be decided every 33 years. The current payment at the time of the lease was $16.32 yearly. 234In 1818, Daniel sold the 100 acres of the old homestead in Allegany Co, MD to his cousin, John Lovett, son of Jonas. (This property subsequently went through several other owners until purchased by a mining company in 1854. In 1876, a portion of the property was purchased by the Barton Lodge #94, I.O.O.F., for use as a cemetery - now Laurel Hill and Mountain View Cemeteries. The remainder of the property is still owned by a strip-mining company that has done reclamation on a portion of it. If there was ever a Lovett family cemetery on the property, all signs were obliterated by subsequent mining efforts.) 196 Daniel is listed on the 1825 Tax List of Muskingum County, Ohio for 101 acres in Jackson Township, R14, T3, S11, S.E., although this simply means that the land was still in his name since Daniel died 27/28 Sep 1821, "aged 53" 9Daniel, Mary, and Mary's mother, Anne Foreman James, are all bured at the Irville Nashport Cemetery, Muskingum Co, OH. Anne James' grave is next to Mary's. Her gravestone reads "B. 1756, D. 7 Jun 1839, Aged 83 Years. Mary's gravestone gives her birthdate as 1771, Died 10 May 1841, 64 years, 10 months, 26 days. Daniel's gravestone reads 1771-1821. Both Daniel's and Mary's birthdates are wrong on their gravestone. 235 His estate was taxed in the 1828 Tax List for the same property as above. Mary was a member of the Christian Church Daniel and Mary were the parents of twelve children, the eight oldest being born in Maryland, and the four youngest in Muskingum Co, Ohio. Property Tax - Jackson, Muskingum, Ohio. 1836 Lovett, Daniel est.: 101/$300 1837 Lovett, Daniel est.: 101/$300
