Comments
==========================================================================================
* Wallace Petrie came to Dakota Territory in 1885, taking out a homestead in what is now
Emmons Co., ND, in 1886. His wife to be came by train from Michigan to Bismarck where
Wallace met her and they were married.
* He was both a rancher and a merchant, and prospered at both. His first store, together
with his sisters Cash and Annie, was at Winchester.
* When Linton became county seat in 1898, he moved the store to Linton and in 1909-1910
erected a new two-story building from native sandstone. From this facility, customers
could buy their groceries, hardware, furniture, and clothing. One family member indicated
that prior to his death, W. E. Petrie owned 27 quarters of land. He donated the land for
the town site of Linton in 1899.
