"Samuel P. Barlow, a well known farmer and resident of the 11th District, was born in Orange Co., NC April 25, 1847. His father, Joseph Barlow, was also a native of the same state, and came to Hardin Co., TN in 1859, settling in the 15th district. He was married to Lucinda Crossett, of Caswell Co., NC. To them were born 10 children, of whom the subject of our sketch was the fifth. He received such education as the common schools of Hardin County afforded in its primitive days. Soon after leaving school he began farming with his father, and so continued until the age of 23. He was married to Miss Sarah J. Churchwell, of Hardin County Oct. 25, 1869. Six children have been born to them; those living are: Cally J., George J., Osborne L., Alice I., and E. and Luke E. (deceased). In 1872 Mr. Barlow purchased the farm upon which he now lives, consisting of between 250 and 300 acres, which is valuable and productive. He is a staunch Democrat, and was elected magistrate of the 11th district in 1882 and served for 4 years. He is a good neighbor, a worthy citizen and an esteemed man."
* Letter from Elizabeth Barlow Mills (Memphis, TN) in 1997 states,
"We have no Barlow pictures except the generation of Samuel Paisley and Sara Jane Churchwell Barlow and only a few of them. Grandpa Barlow's house burned in 1921 just after the death of his second wife. They were cleaning house and burning unwanted items in a fireplace, as was the custom when a death occurred and the sparks ignited the wood roof and the house was completely consumed. Only a small part of the furnishings were saved and I suspect any pictures he might have had were lost. By the way, we have no pictures of the house but from all accounts I've heard it was quite a show place for the time and locality. It was two story with a "widow's watch" on it. The house that he replaced it with-or the remains-still stands but wasn't anything as nice as the one that burned. His place was sold at auction back in the spring. He willed it to Aunt Icie Good's family and they sold it soon after and was rented out and badly abused. It is now just a beat up old house not habitable and will be torn down I'm sure. Property was divided into lots and sold."
