Documentation:
By: Mrs. George P. "Laverne M." Stanford, 403 Kerry Cove, Ripley, MS 38663.
"The name Moore is a hard one to research. There are several Moore families in Tippah Co., MS, descendants of early Moores, but not of our line. Therefore, we have only gone back to George Washington "Wash" Moore, born 1806 in KY, and his brother, Samuel, born 1809 in KY. We have not found the names of their parents or other siblings. Wash was the great grandfather of Mrs. Ila Chunn Stanford, the late mother-in-law of this writer.
"Sometime between 1833 and 1837 Wash and Samuel and their families moved to Tippah Co. The descendants of Wash have heard that they were part American Indian, though the tribe is unknown. He was said to have been a Primitive Baptist preacher. He was also a farmer. The maiden name of the wives of Wash and Samuel are unknown.
"Ila Chunn Stanford, born 1891, said that she was about 5 years old (1896) and living in the Zion Hill Community in Union Co., MS, she remembered Wash sitting in the yard whittling. He would have been around 90 at the time, according to the census records. Ila's family moved to the Pleasant Ridge community, also in Union Co. She assumed he died, although she did not remember when, nor of attending his funeral and burial.
"In 1880 Tippah Co., Ms census shows that Wash was about 74 years of age and suffered with rheumatism. He and his wife, Lucy, were living at that time in the household of his grandson, Wesley Moore, son of Newton J. Moore.
"Wash and his wife, Lucy, are both buried probably along with other members of his family, in what is now known as the Pickens Cem. At one time there was a church near this cemetery known as the Concord Primitive Baptist Church. At the time this church was active there were several stores, and school have long been gone. The only markers in the cemetery are at the graves of members of the Pickens families. There are native sandstones at the heads of many other graves, so we can only assume that the graves of Wash and Lucy and other members of their family are among them.
"Many years ago Mr. Lon Pickens of Ripley, MS told Ila Chunn Stanford that he knew where the graves of Wash and Lucy were located. At that time he was in ill health and later died, so he was never able to show them to her. Thus, as in the case of many unmarked graves, it happens that the spot is lost forever, much to our regret.
"We are thankful, however, for Mrs. Stanford's memories and information which was helpful in our research."
George Washington Moore is on the 1837 tax rolls of Tippah Co., MS.
   He's on the following census for Tippah Co. - 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1870.
1878 Tippah Co. tax list. 1880 Tippah Co., MS census living with grandson Wesley Moore and family. Died between 1896-1900.
