Notes for Mattie Glen Voyles.
* Interview with Hershel and Edward Voyles. Mattie was born in Prentiss County, Mississippi. As a young girl, she and her sisters would put on their bonnets and walk across the field to attend the Baptist church at Little Brown Creek.
* Interview with Martha Dodd. Mattie nursed people and would stay with people that no one else would sit with. People were often quarantined with fevers and their families would abandon them. Mattie would come into their home and nurse them back to health. She learned her nursing skills from riding with Dr. James Sylvester Voyles on his rounds and growing up in the Alcorn County Poorhouse/Almshouse.
Mattie was sick for sometime and lived in the home of her daughter, Jewel Horn Burress until her death.
* Interview with Elmer Burress. Papaw said Mattie was one of the finest women he ever knew.
* Daily Corinthian Newspaper for 1907, Purdy Road, by Bertha
"Miss Mattie Voyles and mother visited at Mrs. Horn's one day last week."
