Husband's Notes
* Opened a variety store (1831) in Monroe in which was sold nearly everything wanted by the early pioneers. After his marriage he founded the village of Newport (1835), which he named after his birthplace, as one of the first settlers and built the first school house, and gave land to the town for general purpose. He opened the General Store, build and operated a sawmill, managed a nursery and greenhouses and operated an open house under the sign of the "Stage and Steamboat House. During the "Patriot War" this was the general rendezvous of the "Hunters" and the Malden Raid was planned at, and started from there. He was postmaster for 30 years and served as Justice of the Peace for most of that time. Later the couple moved back to Monroe where they bought the family home in 1866 but he died before they could move in. The family moved in shortly afterwards.
* He was a member of the Baptist Church.

Wife's Notes
* Article in the Monroe, Mi. Democrat Nov 3,1898:
"A good woman, a notable figure in our day, has just left us. It means much to the community to miss a familiar face, a pleasant voice, an earnest, interested co-worker and a true friend, to have them go out of our lives forever."
She came to Monroe for a visit in 1836 and the following year married William White. The couple then moved to Newport.
