Documentation:
* John Clark first appears in Frankfort, KY records in an 1833 tax record listing "___Clark who married Crumbaugh." (1 tithable) He appears again in 1836 and 1839.
* He appears in the 1850 census as a tailor, age 40, born in Virginia.
* In the 1860 census he is living with his daughter Alice and son-in-law John Tutt in Cheney's Grove Twp., McLean County, IL. In that record he is listed as a "taylor" age 44 born in Virginia.
* On August 11, 1862 John Clark of Cheney's Grove enlisted in Co. F, 116th Illinois Volunteer Infantry as a corporal. He was mustered September 6, 1862 in Decatur. Muster and Descriptive Rolls for the unit say he was age 45, 5'8 1/2" tall, had gray hair and light complexion, was a tailor and his nativity was Ohio County, Virginia. Service records from the National Archives show he was present 9/6/1862 to March 1863. On March 19, 1863 he was first reported absent, sick, and sent to the hospital boat at Milliken's Bend, LA. On March 30, 186_(date unreadable) he was assigned to 62nd Co., 2nd Battalion of the Veteran Reserve Corps. (originally known as he "Invalid Corps." this was a unit for soldiers who were not fit, due to wounds or sickness, for active duty). He does not appear to have ever filed for or received a pension for his service.
* He has not been found in the 1870 census.
* In the 1880 census he appears in the household of his daughter Margaret and son-in-law Alexander Ross in Bloomington Twp., McLean County, IL. That entry shows him as age 67, born in Virginia and says both his parents were born in Virginia. The Ross family later moved to Streator, LaSalle County, IL where they appear in the 1900 and 1910 censuses, but John Clark is not with them.
* A John Clark is shown as buried in Block 26, Lot 6 at Riverview Cemetery, Streator, IL on 29 March 1893. This person was age 84, was buried by Howland Funeral Home and was listed as mentally incompetent. Because of a lack of records it is not possible to determine if this person is the right John Clark but it is interesting to note that Margaret Clark Ross' son Jacob is buried at Riverview (per cousin Jan Robertson).
* LaSalle County death records and Streator newspapers have been searched but no record of a John Clark death has been found. Most information regarding the children of John Clark and Mary Crumbaugh are from the records of the Church of the Ascension, Frankfort, KY.
