Documentation:
* Note from Vicki Burress Roach: I haven't done much Chunn research, but the earliest Chunn I've located thus far in the United States was a Rebecca Chunn in 1760 in Trinity Parish, Charles Co., MD. I find a number of Chunn families in MD during the 1770's and 1780's. Wonder if our line descends from them? According to Shirley Stanford there was a John Chunn from England who came to America and settled in Maryland. He had many descendants, but we haven't linked G.W. with them.
* In May, 2002 we began corresponding online with Stacie Leng who states her ancestor is Robert James M. Chunn and he was a brother to our George Washington Chunn. She states their parents were William and Nancy Chunn, but other Chunn researchers contradict this so we are continuing to research and speculate!
* 1840 Tennessee census shows 3 possibilites for G.W.'s father: Wm. Chunn in Gibson Co.; Wm. Chun in Weakley Co.; Samuel L. Chunn in Polk Co.
* >From THE CHUNN CLAN By Mrs. George Stanford and Mrs. James Stanford: "In 1981 Anna Lee Magill stated to the writer that her father, Newton Jasper Chunn, told her his grandfather, the father of George W. Chunn was full-blooded Irish. In 1976 Macie Bell Barton said she heard her father, Newton Jasper Chunn, say his father was Scotch-Irish. Jasper Chunn, great grandson of G.W. Chunn, and Mrs. Loretta Easley, said they had always understood the Chunns came from SC to MS. Another family member states that three Chunns came to this country. Thomas (who had a son named Thomas); Andrew (who died in the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862 and is supposedly buried there); and another Chunn, name unknown. This has also not been proven.
* Mrs. Stanford didn't find a Chunn on any passenger lists.
* Mrs. Stanford states she first found G.W. Chunn on the 1860 census of Tippah Co., MS married with 4 children the oldest being 7 years old, born 1853 which is correct. His address was Ripley and he was a farm laborer. Their ages are incorrect going by G.W.'s military records and his wife's tombstone. His military records puts his date of birth around 1835."
* 1860 Tippah Co., MS census
George CHUNN age 22 male farmer /300 TN
Nancy A. 23 F KY
Lucy 4 F MS
Thomas 2 M MS
Newton J. 1 M MS
Emmer J. 7 F MS
* July 31, 1861 G.W. Chunn mustered into State of Mississippi service to serve a period of one year.
* Confederate Records for G.W. Chunn, private, age 25 years, Capt. Robert J. Hill's Co. Falkner Guard, 2nd Regiment, 1 Brig., Mississippi Vols. Muster Roll for Aug. 24 to Sept. 19, 1861, Pvt. G.W. Chunn in Co. B, 2Regt., 1 Brig, Army of Mississippi, enlisted: When: July 31, 1861, where: Orziba, By whom: E.M. Wells, period: 12 months. remarks: died in hospital at Kopkinsville, KY Oct. 27, 1861
September 19, 1861 Transferred to Confederate Service from 2nd Regiment, 1st Brigade, Mississippi Volunteers to 23rd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry. This regiment was also known as the 3rd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry.
October 27, 1861 G.W. Chunn died of measles in hospital in Kopkinsville, KY. (We feel sure he is buried under the monument in Riverside Cemetery which commemorates 101 unknown soldiers who died in the winter of 1861-62, since the 3rd Miss. Regiment is listed as one of the commands of soldiers buried there.) Muster roll states he had no money and his effects were: tribles received Feb. 5, 1862.
* The family had heard that he was recovering when he received word that two of his children, Lucy and John Falkner, were seriously ill. He was preparing to obtain a furlough during which time he went to Headquarters in a downpour of rain, had a relapse of the measles and died. The two ill children also died.
* According to writer Andrew Brown, of the 23rd original 737 soldiers, 91 died of diseases, and 45 were buried in Hopkinsville, KY.
* An Administrative bond was posted Dec. 16, 1861 naming Nancy Chunn his administratrix with G.W. Moore, her father. Nancy Jane was left a young widow at the age of 29 with three small children. She never remarried. Col. W.C. Falkner, who organized the Falkner Guards which G.W. Chunn joined, was a close friend of the family and is said to have aided her financially. Since he was a lawyer, perhaps he assisted her in obtaining a small pension from the State of Miss., which her granddaughter, Ila Chunn Stanford, said she received.
* Andrew Brown also notes a C.C. Chunn who was one of the incorporators of the Ripley Railroad. There were 35 other men whose names were also mentioned in 1871. Most of these men were from Ripley, and Salem which is now Ashland, MS. To date Mrs. Stanford had not locted a C.C. Chunn on either the Tippah or Benton Co. census records.
