Documentation: OBITUARY: THE WESTERN TIMES, SHARON SPRINGS, KANSAS
George B. Gardner
George B. Gardner was born in Fitchburg, Massachusettes, April 13, 1853,
and at the age of 13 (I think 3) moved with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.
F. Gardner to Manhattan, Kansas. On October 11, 1880, he was united in
marriage with Isabelle Lewis and to this union were born four children,
two boys and two girls, three of whom are living. Daisy died in infancy.
The living are, Mrs. Rozella Lock of Wallace; Harvey Lee Gardner of St.
Louis, MO and George H. Gardner of Kansas City, MO. The aged widow
survives, also five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Two
brothers, Charley Gardner in California and Ed Gardner in Wallace.
Several nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Mr. Gardner and family moved to Wallace in May 1905, where he has made
his home until his death, which came March 2, 1935, at the ripe age of 81
years, 10 months and 19 days, which recalls the words of the Psalmist:
"The days of our years are three score years and ten, yet is their
strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off and we fly away." In
the stillness of the night-time he folded his hands on his bosom and fell
asleep.
While living in Manhattan he united with the Christian Church, and
continued in that faith. Funeral services were held at the home in
Wallace, Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. M. E. Smith, with the music
by the Dinas Quartette, and the body was laid to rest in the Wallace
Cemetery.
OBITUARY:
GEORGE B. GARDNER DIES
PIONEER WALLACE RESIDENT SUCCUMBS UNEXPECTEDLY SATURDAY NIGHT. RESIDENT
OF COUNTY 30 YEARS.
George B. Gardner of Wallace, passed away unexpectedly at his home in
Wallace, Saturday, March 2, at the age of 81 years, ten months and 19
days. His death was attributed to general sinility and came as a shock to
his family, as he had not complained of feeling ill. Mr. Gardner ate a
hardy supper and retired to bed, death overtaking him some time in the
night.
Mr. Gardner and his wife came to Wallace County in 1905 from Manhattan,
coming out with Peter Robidouk to assume work for him on some of his
extensive land holdings at that time. Finding Wallace County to their
liking, Mr. and Mrs. Gardner have continued to make their home here since
that time. Mr. Gardner is survived by his aged widow, one daughter, Mrs.
Roy Lock of Wallace, and two sons, George H. of Kansas City and Harvey
Lee of Saint Louis, MO.
Funeral services were held at the home at 3:30 pm Monday, March 4 with
Rev. M. E. Smith of Sharon Springs in charge. Burial was made in the
Wallace cemetery.
