Family tradition:
1.  Anna Maria Schulz born in France. Her death certificate lists "France" as her birth place. Family tradition is that Claus Schulz was a soldier in the German army who was stationed in Alsace of Lorraine after the Franco-Prussian War and his daughter was born there. This, in part, is verified by his obituary, which says he was a member of the Krieger Verein and of the Kampfgenossen of 1870-71 (two German veteran's organizations).
2.  The family initially immigrated to Manistee, MI, where Maria Dorothea died in 1887. Family tradition says that after her death Claus moved the family into a "squatters shack" in the sand dunes near Lake Michigan where they lived until moving to Davenport. August Schulz died of a heart attack after climbing the dune to visit the site during a 1931 visit to Manistee. The dunes no longer exist - several years ago they were sold to make glass for the automobile industry (evidently the sand was trucked away). The area (as of 1988) was a flat but sandy place. The spot where the shack was located (called "Schulz Hollow" by the family) was, as of 1988, a few feet into Lake Michigan - in a spot deeper than the surrounding area (it was evident the deeper area was man made by some piece of excavation equipment).
3.  Sophie Schulz is supposed to have gone by the name "Kitty Kelly" and died in Chicago, IL in the 1950's or 1960's.
