Husbands Notes
* Joel was born in 1787 in Madison County, Virginia. He was baptized at the Hebron Church. In 1795, when Joel was about eight years old, his family moved to Woodford County Kentucky, Shortly after the move, Joel's father, Isaac, died. His mother, Anna, returned to Virginia with Joel, his brothers Thomas, James and Isaac and his sister Mary Ann. (Add info about support and education from estate.) In 1810 when the final settlement of Isaac's estate was distributed to his children, Joel had already received his share. Joel would have been twenty-three in 1810. It is not known when Joel returned to Kentucky or when he married Sarah Ann. His obituary states that he moved from Virginia to Kentucky where he married, had two daughters and a son. His daughter Mary Ann was born in 1813 in Kentucky and son James in 1814. No records have been found for Joel's other daughter. Joel moved to Putnam County, Indiana, which later became Hendricks County, Indiana, in 1824 and was considered a pioneer of the area. He is listed in the 1830 census record for Hendricks County (Check records for his wife and number of children.) In 1835 Joel transferred a tract of land in Hendricks County to his son, James H. Jelf. Joel sold 40 acres of land in 1836. It is not known how Joel acquired the 80 acres of land mentioned above. Joel and son James are listed in separate households on the 1840 Hendricks County Census. In 1841 Joel and James acquired 40 acres of land jointly. Joel sold 40 acres in 1841 and acquired 40 acres in 1844. Sarah died between 1840 and 1845. Joel married Mary Gilmore in 1845 at the age of fifty-eight. In 1846 Joel acquired an additional 80 acres of land. Also in 1846 Joel transferred another 40 acres of land to his son James. In 1847 Joel once again acquired a tract of 40 acres. In 1849 Joel and wife, Mary acquired two additional tracts of land. One tract was 40 acres. The size of the other tract is not known. In 1850 Joel and Mary sold two tracts of land. One tract was 80 acres. The size of the second tract is not known. In 1851 Jelf & Jelf purchased two tracts of land. It is not clear if this was Joel and Mary Jelf or Joel and James H. Jelf. Joel bought and sold 40 acre parcels of land. It appears that he was buying land grants that were not being worked. Joel and Mary are listed on the 1850 and the 1870 census records for Hendricks County. (Check the 1860 records.) Joel's occupation was listed as Harness Maker. Isaac Stephen Jelf, the son of Joel's brother, Thomas, was also a Harness Maker. Joel's daughter, Mary Ann, died in 1872. His other daughter died before Joel. When Joel died in 1875, he was survived by his wife Mary, who died in 1876 and son James.

* History of Hendricks County: Hendricks County was officially formed by an act of the Indiana legislature in April, 1824. It was formed from the area of Putnam County and some unorganized territory, and named Hendricks in honor of Indiana's governor, William Hendricks. Hendricks County borders on Boone County to the north, Montgomery and Putnam Counties to the west, Morgan County to the south, and Marion County (Indianapolis) to the east. During the early settlement families came to Hendricks from the Indianapolis area, because of the good farmland and opportunities to be had.

* Hendricks County Indiana Church History
The Regular Baptist church at Danville was organized in the year 1823, having the distinction of being the first religious organization in the county and also of having been organized before the county. Some of the early members were William Faught and wife, Thomas Flathers and wife, Joel Jelf and L. T. Pounds. Elder J. W. Thomas preached for some time prior to the year 1836. Elders William Hardin and Thomas Hooten each served for a number of years. The latter's back was broken by a falling shed and he died a year after the accident. Elder Erasmus D. Thomas commenced his labors here before the war. The church has had three houses of worship. The first, a log structure, was used until 1852, when a new frame building was constructed. This house was used until 1903, when the present building was built. The regular services of the church are held monthly on the second Saturday and Sunday following in each month. Elder E. W. Thomas, the son of Erasmus D. Thomas, has served the church continuously.
* Hendrick County, Indiana Census. This special census was certified on 1 July 1853 by Allen Hess, the Hendricks County Auditor. It was an enumeration of all white males over the age of 21. The census asked only for the male's first and last name: Jelf, Joel, Liberty Township

Another Pioneer Gone
The subject of this sketch, Joel Jelf, died at his home in Cartersburg, on the 29th day of October, 1875. He was born in Virginia in 1787, consequently was 88 years old. He moved to the state of Kentucky at an early day (date not known) and married in that state, and there were born three children, two girls and a boy, one of whom now survives him - James H. Jelf, a few years ago well known to many citizens of this county, but now a resident of Fremont County, Iowa. The deceased moved to this county about the year 1828, settled a short distance west of Danville, where he lived for many years. In 1844 he moved about three miles south of Clayton, thence to Belleville, and from there to Cartersburg, his last abiding place on earth. His remains were taken to the cemetery at old Salem Church, about three miles southeast of Belleville, for interment. As a neighbor he was generous and obliging; as a husband, good andfaithful. He joined the Baptist Church when young, and lived a consistant member until the day of his death. Thus passed away one of the oldest pioneers in Hendricks County. L.A.H.
