Mr. Fetzer, who will be 92 September 6, says he has served on the election board in Liberty Township for 70 years. He recalls serving when voting was done by the Australian Ballot system and when members of the board, working until all votes were tabulated, often worked practically around the clock, beginning the day at 6 in the morning and counting the last votes at 2 or later the following morning. Serving with Mr. Fetzer in those early years were Eugene Williams, Inspector; P. C. Wooster, Judge; Charles Keck, Clerk; and Wash. Stull, Sheriff all of whom were well known in North Liberty at one time buy [sic] now deceased and many of whom can still be remembered by some North Liberty residents. Mr. Fetzer is till armed with a good supply of jokes and stories pertinent to elections and generally does his share of spicing up the lulls at the polls during election day. He has lived his entire life in North Liberty and most of his life he has resided in the house on N. Main Street where he and his wife, Fannie, are presently living. He walks to the polls with the aid of a cane and at a gait possible somewhat slower than 70 years ago. North Liberty, in his lifetime, has changed from dirt streets to paved, from hitching posts to parallel parking, from general stores to super-markets but casting a ballot for a candidate of your choice is something he has not seen changed and something that all Americans can be grateful for."
