Documentation:
* The marriage of William W. HAMMOND and Martha THURMOND took place in Jackson County, and was signed by William SIMPKINS, Ordinary of the Court.
* The 1870 Jackson Co. Census lists William HAMMOND age 58, b. GA,farmer; wife Martha age 36, b. GA; James A., age 6; Jabus L. age 4; Frances E. age 3. Also listed is Oliver Newill, age 70, M, B, Farm Laborer; and Green Shields, age 14, M, B, Farm Laborer.
* Living next door to William and Martha are Susan THURMOND, age 59, and her daughter, Susan age 23. The elder Susan THURMOND is most likely the mother of Martha THURMOND. She is found on the 1850 Jackson Co., GA Census: Family 525, Susan THURMOND age 39, b. GA; Martha age 16, b. GA; Harrison age 14, b. GA; and Susan age 2, b. GA.
* There is a will listed in Jackson Co. Wills, Will Book Vol. A 1803-1860, for a Harrison THURMOND, pg. 276.
* Either Martha's father died before the 1850 Census, or was not living at home at the time of the Census.
* There was a listing for a Harrison THURMOND on the 1830 Jackson Co. GA Census with two children ages 5-9, three children ages 10-14, two people ages 15-19, and one person 50-59, with one slave.
* Nothing is known about Martha after the death of William W. HAMMOND on 15 Sep 1872. Perhaps she married a 2nd husband.
* William was reportedly buried on his farm near Jackson Co. The farm was later known as the "Sam Hunter" farm. William's grave was last seen by my late uncle, Gerald Hammond, and some other realtives, several years ago. A barn (or some structure) was built over it or near it. This area was located in, or near, what was later part of Arcade, GA.
* One Jabez L. HAMMONS was listed on the 1900 Jackson Co., GA Census, 245-Militia Dist., Dwelling #374, Family #388: Jabez L. HAMMONS, age 31, b. GA, farmer; Anna, age 28, b. GA; Albert age 6, b. GA; Hugh age 4, b. GA. This may be Jabus/Jobie HAMMOND/HAMMONS. The initial "L" is unclear and could have easily been an "N" instead.
* One N. C. HAMMONS was also on the 1900 Jackson Co., GA Census, 245-Militia Dist. He is age 30, b. GA; wife Sarah, age 35, b. GA; George age 10, b. GA; Natt age 8, b. GA (named for his father, Nathan?); William age 6, b. GA (named for his grandfather, William W. HAMMOND/HAMMONS?); and Robert age 4, b. GA. These are most likely two of the sons of William and Martha HAMMOND/HAMMONS.
* In 1910, a Nathan C. HAMMONS is listed on the Jackson Co. Census, Minnish Precinct. His wife is listed as Mattie, age 45, b. MS. (Did Sarah die?) Is this a 2nd marriage for Nathan? Also in the household is Willie A. age 15; Obie/Robie (?) C. age 14; Daisie A. (unclear if this is her actual name) age 13, Lizzie N. age 12; Clarence age 8; Mary M. age 6; Frank L. age 4; Rosco (?) age 3. Also living with them are two boarders, Vernon (?) Howell age 52, and Truman Dishioam (?) age 15. The last name for Truman is impossible to read.
* One Nathan Carithus HAMMOND was buried at the Bogart Methodist Church in Oconee Co., GA.(1862-1939). His dates are quite different from our Nathan C. HAMMOND (b. 1870) However, buried next to him is Mattie Altonia HAMMOND (1864-1923). Could the dates have been changed due to the age difference of husband and wife, and perhaps being sensitive re. such? This would appear to be the Nathan C. and Mattie HAMMONS who were in Jackson Co. GA on the 1910 Census.
