About 1840 he moved his family in a covered wagon to settle on a homestead on the Sante Fe River near present day Brooker, FL in Bradford County. He established a fort there named Fort Ward during the Seminole Indian War. He was active in the early government of Florida signing a petition in 1832 asking for an appointment of Col James Gadsden as Governor of Florida.
