   The second child and eldest son of Spencer and Elizabeth [Jones] Monroe.
   The Monroe children were young when Spencer and Elizabeth died and the management of
the estate and the children fell to their maternal uncle, Judge Joseph Jones of
Frericksburg.
   The Monroe Doctrine is a name applied to the young government's opinion on the
American continents: ". . . the American continents," Monroe stated, "by the free and
independent condition which they have assumed and maintain, are henceforth not to be
considered as subjects for future colonization by any European Power." [The White House]
   In the election of 1820 Monroe received every electoral vote except one. A New
Hampshire delegate wanted Washington to be the only president elected unanimously. [IPL2]

General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth KORTRIGHT
==========================================================================================

   Very little is known of Elizabeth's early life.
   "In 1794, Elizabeth Monroe accompanied her husband to France when President Washington
appointed him United States Minister. Arriving in Paris in the midst of the French
Revolution, she took a dramatic part in saving Lafayette's wife, imprisoned and expecting
death on the guillotine. With only her servants in her carriage, the American Minister's
wife went to the prison and asked to see Madame Lafayette. Soon after this hint of
American interest, the prisoner was set free. The Monroes became very popular in France,
where the diplomat's lady received the affectionate name of la belle Americaine." [The
White House]
   James' and Elizabeth's daughter was the bride in the first "President's child" wedding
held in the White House. [IPL2]
   Elizabeth was in ill health through most of her husband's terms in office.

My Notes
==========================================================================================

I found a lot of UN-SOURCED information on the parents and siblings of James Monroe but so
much of it was conflicting that I chose not to display that family group. "Personal
knowledge" is NOT a SOURCE and, unless the PERSON is over 200 years old, a bit
preposterous.

If there is no SOURCE, I have no PROOF! If the source is a PERSON, the information is HEARSAY!
